Ajinkya Rahane and the Kolkata Knight Riders team didn’t have their dream IPL 2026 campaign as they exited after the Rajasthan Royals triumphed over the Mumbai Indians on the afternoon game of May 24.
While equations came into play to complicate KKR’s qualification scenarios as they hoped to claim the Top 4 spot, things could have been a bit better if the Knight Riders hadn’t got off to a poor start early in the season.
A string of losses during the very start of the campaign raised questions and also pointed fingers at Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy.
As the season ends for the Purple and Gold, Rahane himself dropped a massive hint on whether he would like to captain the team in the future or not.
Ajinkya Rahane On Criticism And Early Losses
Rahane shared a heartfelt confession after the heavy defeat against the Delhi Capitals in their last match of IPL 2026 at Eden Gardens on May 24.
During a post-match press conference, Rahane shared that criticism will always be there if performance lacks. However, he admitted how he stayed strong to fight the cracks inside the team that led to the first five consecutive defeats.
“We as cricketers are where we are because of the fans. They will appreciate when we do well and also criticise us when we do badly. This is a part of the game. Every cricketer understands this. Talking about myself, I have always played cricket with a positive attitude. Character is very important to me."

"I am not down to back down. When the team struggles, that is where you show your character. Pressure will come; it’s very natural. Pressure is always on those who are privileged. Not everyone can handle pressure."
"The most important thing for me was that I should remain strong and not panic,” Ajinkya Rahane said after their loss against the Delhi Capitals on Sunday.
Rahane Hints At KKR's Captaincy Future
Ajinkya Rahane then hinted at the future of KKR captaincy as he shared his attitude towards the franchise and the fighting spirit he carries within himself.
“It’s very easy that after losing 5-6 matches, your mind wanders to the past or the future. It’s important for you to stay in the moment. Things can turn around any time. We have seen that time and again in matches and many other series where things change in an instant. You have to keep that attitude and character," Rahane added.
Rahane shared that he would have never thought of leaving the KKR captaincy mid-season as demanded by multiple fans and the internet. Although the management might decide otherwise, Rahane’s intention is clearly not to step down by himself.
“Like I said, I have never been the one to back down from anything so these thoughts have never come to my mind. I told everyone in the team that it’ll take one game to change things around. We just have to believe.
We just have to keep doing what we are doing. Yeah, we had to make some tweaks but that’s fine. We accepted that we did not play to our potential and the criticism. When you do not accept things, then problems pile up,” he added.
Conclusion: Rahane’s Captaincy Days For KKR Are Over
Soumyajit's opinion
The equation between the team management and a captain is always important to know whether the captain is staying long-term or getting sacked.
Although the Rahane-Abhishek Nayar relationship is not publicly known by many, it seems like KKR is set to trust him once again.
However, in a different opinion, Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy days are over as of now. The Indian veteran captained KKR in 27 matches and won only 10, for a win percentage of 37.03%. Rahane now has the worst captaincy record for the Knight Riders, amongst captains who have led the team for at least 20 games or more.
That being said, it is highly likely that KKR management should seek a better option in the squad, preferably Sunil Narine as a senior veteran or Rinku Singh as the vice-captain.
