Australia have already started preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup and the selectors are closely looking at players who can play important finishing roles in the future.

Tim David and Cameron Green have become two major names in these discussions as Australia search for a player who can handle pressure calmly and guide the team in difficult moments.

Notably, Australia are set to play three ODIs in Pakistan followed by another three matches in Bangladesh starting from May 30. These tours are expected to help the team management test different combinations for the future.

Moreover, selectors want to build a strong and balanced side ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Australia View Cameron Green As A Game-Changer

Cameron Green will be one of the biggest focus areas during these matches. The all-rounder has already shown his ability in ODIs with a brilliant 47-ball century against South Africa last year. In addition, he was also part of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup-winning squad.

The selectors believe Green can offer balance with both bat and ball. Therefore, these upcoming series could play a huge role in deciding his long-term position in the ODI team.

Tim David's ODI Return Uncertain For 2027 World Cup

Tim David is also being considered as a possible finisher for Australia’s future ODI plans. His aggressive batting style and power-hitting ability make him an exciting option for the middle order. However, he has not made himself available for ODI cricket at the moment.

Tim David, who is currently playing in IPL 2026, is focusing more on T20 cricket at this stage. Meanwhile, Australia coach Andrew McDonald revealed that despite several discussions, the selectors have not yet been able to convince David to expand his role beyond T20Is due to his franchise commitments around the world.

Andrew McDonald confirmed that the selectors are still interested in Tim David’s potential role in the format.

McDonald said, “It is something we're looking at. Tim hasn't made himself available for ODI cricket as yet in amongst everything that he's doing.”

He further added, “TD was someone that we felt could potentially play in that finishing No.7 role.”

Cameron Green Under Pressure Ahead Of Busy Schedule

Cameron Green now enters an important phase in his career as Australia prepare for a packed international schedule. The team will play nearly 20 Test matches over the next 18 months, including challenging overseas tours in India, England and South Africa.

Although Green had a difficult Ashes series and a quiet T20 World Cup campaign, the selectors continue to back his talent and all-round abilities.

Notably, Australia are viewing him as a potential finisher similar to MS Dhoni, who was famous for batting lower down the order and handling pressure brilliantly.

Although Cameron Green has batted at No.3 and No.4 in his last ODI innings, McDonald revealed that the selectors are also keen to test him in an all-round finishing role ahead of the 2027 World Cup following Glenn Maxwell’s retirement.

"I think he's got the ability to play high up the order and low," McDonald told reporters just prior to the squad leaving for Pakistan.

Furthermore, his calm attitude and ability to contribute in different situations make him a valuable option for Australia.

Rajgeeta’s Take

In my opinion, Australia are moving in the right direction by focusing on both Tim David and Cameron Green for the future.

At this stage, Cameron Green looks slightly ahead in Australia’s long-term ODI plans due to his all-round skills. Still, Tim David remains a handy option if he decides to return to ODI cricket.

If both players continue improving, Australia could build a strong middle order capable of handling pressure situations successfully.
