Ajinkya Rahane is an elegant right-hand top-order batter who represents Mumbai and India. In a modern dressing room often characterized by flair and flamboyant styles, Rahane stands out as a simple, grounded individual who possesses a deep understanding of his batting strengths. 

Known for his impeccable technique and composure, especially against the moving ball, he has frequently been India’s "go-to man" during rescue operations in challenging SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) conditions. Many consider him one of the most complete batters in the post-fab five era.

Ajinkya Rahane Domestic Career

Ajinkya Rahane’s journey to the senior level was paved with prolific runs in the domestic circuit. He rose to prominence during the 2008/09 Ranji Trophy season, where he amassed a staggering 1,089 runs, playing a pivotal role in helping Mumbai clinch their 38th Ranji title.

His leadership qualities and consistency have remained constant throughout his career; most recently, he led Mumbai to the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 title and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy  2024-25, where he showcased a T20 resurgence by scoring 469 runs at an average of 58.62.

Ajinkya Rahane T20I Career

Ajinkya Rahane made his T20I debut against England in 2011, making an immediate impact by scoring a fluent 61. This feat made him the first Indian batter to score a half-century on his T20I debut. 

He was also a member of the Indian squad for the 2014 T20 World Cup, contributing 54 runs in three innings as the team reached the final. Despite his early success, he has been out of the T20I setup since 2017 as the team moved toward different tactical directions.

Ajinkya Rahane ODI Career

Following his T20I debut, Ajinkya Rahane transitioned into ODIs with a commanding 40 against England in 2011. This innings was a testament to his technical prowess in English conditions. 

The Mumbaikar was a key member in the Indian squad during the 2015 ODI World Cup, where he amassed 208 runs in seven innings, including a fiery 79 against South Africa at the MCG. 

Over the years, he provided stability to the top and middle order, though his last appearance in the ODI format came in 2018. 

Ajinkya Rahane Test Career

While Ajinkya Rahane excelled early in limited-overs cricket, he had to wait until 2013 to make his Test debut against Australia. Though he struggled in his first match, he soon became India's most reliable batter outside Asia. 

Ajinkya Rahane's Test career can be defined in the following 4 points:

SENA Specialist: He proved his mettle with a gritty 96 in South Africa (2013), a maiden ton in New Zealand, and a legendary 103 on a green top at Lord’s in 2014.

Records: In 2015, he set a world record by taking eight catches in a single Test against Sri Lanka and became the fifth Indian to score twin centuries in a single Test (vs. South Africa).

Captaincy: His crowning moment came as captain during the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After India was bowled out for 36 in the first Test, Rahane took over for Virat Kohli, scored a sublime century at the MCG, and led a young side to a historic 2-1 series victory.

Resurgence: After being dropped in early 2022, he made a successful comeback in the 2023 World Test Championship final, scoring 89 and 46 to cross the 5,000-run milestone. 

Ajinkya Rahane IPL Career

Ajinkya Rahane has enjoyed a long and evolving IPL career. He was a model of consistency, recording seasons of 560 and 540 runs in IPL 2012 and IPL 2015, respectively. 

After a brief dip in form between 2020 and 2022, he experienced a "T20 renaissance" with Chennai Super Kings in 2023, scoring 326 runs at a massive strike rate of 172.48. 

Following a 209-run contribution in 2024, Rahane entered a new chapter in 2025, where he was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1.5 Crores to serve as their captain. He was again retained as captain of the three-time champions for IPL 2026.
