The Indian Premier League (IPL) has long been a stage where batting greatness is measured with towering sixes and match-winning knocks. Amid the glamour of exquisite stroke-play, there lies a dreadful ‘duck’ statistic.

While tailenders are often expected to account for the majority of scoreless outings, even experienced batters with lengthy IPL careers can find themselves accumulating an unwanted tally. Here is a look at some of the IPL players with the highest number of ducks to their names.

3. Piyush Chawla and Rashid Khan – 16 ducks each

Former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla registered 16 ducks in 92 innings spanning 192 IPL matches. Having played for four different franchises in his 16-season IPL career, the tailender notched up 624 runs at a dismal average of 11.14.

While Chawla is also one of the leading wicket-takers in the history of the tournament, his fondest memory with the bat might be the decisive cameo he unleashed in the IPL 2014 final for the KKR.

Fellow legendary spinner Rashid Khan has also tallied 16 ducks in his storied IPL career from 72 innings. However, unlike Piyush Chawla, the ex-SRH spinner and active Gujarat Titans cricketer holds a penchant of scoring quick runs at the death.

The Afghanistan all-rounder already has an IPL fifty to his name, and he holds a staggering batting strike rate of 157.36 in the tournament.

2. Dinesh Karthik and Sunil Narine – 18 ducks each

Former KKR skipper and IPL journeyman Dinesh Karthik tallied 18 ducks to his name. However, the seasoned wicketkeeper-batter also played 257 matches in his illustrious 17-season IPL career between the years 2008 and 2024.

Apart from holding a shambolic record, Karthik is one of the most prolific wicketkeeper-batters in IPL history. He aggregated 4,842 runs in 234 innings, having played for franchises like RCB, KKR, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions.

KKR pinch-hitter and franchise zealot Sunil Narine has also tallied 18 ducks to his name, albeit in much lesser number of innings. The West Indies all-rounder has played 201 IPL matches since his debut in 2012, all for the KKR franchise, and went on to bat 126 times over his 15-year career.

Notably, Narine has also forged seven fifties and a century in his career, including one of the fastest half-centuries in tournament’s history. He holds a staggering strike rate of 165.30, and has served the KKR either as a top-order dynamite or a death-overs slogger.

1. Rohit Sharma and Glenn Maxwell – 19 ducks each

One of only two cricketers in IPL history with an aggregate of over 7,000 runs; Rohit Sharma also holds a shambolic record of listing the joint-highest number of ducks in his career. The legendary opener registered the 19th duck of his IPL career during Mumbai Indians’ final home match of the IPL 2026 season at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

The former Mumbai Indians captain was dismissed for a four-ball duck by Jofra Archer in the first over of the run chase. Overall, Rohit has registered 19 ducks in 276 IPL innings for Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians franchises.

Champion Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell tops this unwanted list for recording 19 ducks in his IPL career from just 135 innings. On an average, Maxwell records an IPL duck once in every seven innings.

The hard-hitting middle-order batter has played 141 matches in his career for four different franchises. While Glenn Maxwell has charted 18 half-centuries in his 13-year journey, the cricketer struck 15 of those fifties over the course of just three different seasons (2014, 2021 and 2023), thus indicating his largely uneven run with the bat in the tournament.
