In a major development, Cricket Australia (CA) is planning to bring the opening match of this year’s 2026-27 Big Bash League (BBL) to India. If reports are to be believed, the opening match of the Australian league will be hosted by the iconic Chepauk Stadium in Chennai, which also happens to be the home ground of the CSK franchise.
CA is bringing the BBL 2026-27 season to India in a bid to enhance the league’s profile, all while strengthening its relations with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
While many fans are perceiving this potential crossover as a big victory for India-Australia cricketing ties, a certain former Australian cricketer is of the opinion that the move can jeopardize the popularity of Test matches ‘Down Under’.
Mark Taylor opposes BBL 2026-27 opener in India
Mark Taylor has opposed the idea of taking away the opening match of a BBL season from Australia. The cricketer-turned-commentator is of the opinion that taking a BBL opener out of Australia might also take away the limelight from Test matches set to be hosted by the country around the same period.
It is worth noting that a part of BBL seasons in Australia always coincide with Australia’s home Test series against a visiting nation.

While speaking on Channel 9, Mark Taylor said “As a Test lover, I don’t particularly like it. If it happens, it will happen in early or mid-December, when the Test matches are due to start. Australia is scheduled to play New Zealand in a four-Test series starting December 9. So to me, any sort of game like that will take away (limelight) from the Test matches which I love.”

Taylor added “If two Big Bash teams go to India right at the time when Australia are playing in a Test series here in Australia. Finding the solution is really tough. I hope that everyone gets together on this and thinks what is good for Australian cricket. We’ve got to produce the next lot of cricketers as well, not just the ones that are making good money today.”
Why is CA bringing BBL 2026-27 to Indian market?
Shortly after the conclusion of the BBL 2025-26 season in Australia earlier this year, several reports indicated that Cricket Australia is planning to host the first match of BBL 2026-27 in India. SEN Radio even reported that the board had specifically shown interest for the match to be held in Chennai.
As reported by Tom Morris, Cricket Australia’s revolutionary plan is part of a “wider strategy” to tap into the lucrative Indian market considering at least two out of the eight BBL teams were inching closer to a near-certain sale at the time.
Indian businessmen and IPL owners already own multiple franchises in several other T20 leagues like SA20, CPL, ILT20, Major League Cricket and The Hundred. It was reported that CA is keen to attract similar investment for its BBL.
Who won BBL 2026?
Perth Scorchers won the BBL 2025-26 title in Australia a few months ago. The decorated franchise thrashed Sydney Sixers by six wickets and 15 balls to spare in the final.
While CA has not announced the schedule of BBL 2026-27 yet, one can assume that the two sides will likely emerge as frontrunners to feature in that historic opener in Chennai later this year.
Akash's Conclusion on the BBL Entry in India
While Mark Taylor fears the move could overshadow Australia’s home Test summer, his concern may be somewhat overstated.
In my humble opinion, a solitary BBL fixture in India is unlikely to take away people’s interest in Test cricket, considering the two formats largely cater to distinct viewing experience and expectations.
