Nita Ambani during MI's IPL 2026 match [Source: AFP]
The five-time champions Mumbai Indians took the field for the final time in IPL 2026 on Sunday afternoon at the Wankhede Stadium as they faced Rajasthan Royals in the penultimate match of the league phase. This is the annual ESA Match Day, organised by the MI owner, Nita Ambani, inviting around 20,000 underprivileged kids to attend the game for free.
Amidst the ongoing clash, a video featuring Nita Ambani went viral, in which a student was seen openly trolling MI in front of the owner, who had to hide her face in public.
MI owner Nita Ambani left embarrassed by student
The video, which is doing the rounds on social media, comes from an event at the Dhirubhai Ambani International School, where a boy took to the podium in Nita Ambani’s presence. During his speech, it seemed like he was trying to give a motivational talk to the audience, but ended up taking a jibe at MI.
While addressing the crowd, he said, “Just like our beloved Mumbai Indians, there will be tough seasons.” And the camera immediately panned towards the MI owner, who looked visibly embarrassed with the team’s performance this season.
Nita Ambani saw the funny side of the speech and laughed it off alongside the crowd without reacting much. Other dignitaries also shared a laugh as the speech went on. Notably, it is unconfirmed, but the event looked like a graduation ceremony at the Ambani-owned school, where such fun could be expected.

MI’s poor IPL 2026
Ahead of MI’s clash against the Royals, they are placed 9th on the points table, and regardless of the result, they cannot move up. They managed to accumulate only 8 points in 13 matches with 4 wins and 9 losses. At the moment, they are level on points with the bottom-placed LSG, with a better net run-rate.
Although their season has ended early, a win over RR would mean the opponents will be knocked out of the competition, and the final place will be up for grabs in the last match of the league phase.
Ryan Rickelton is their leading run-getter of the season with 436 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 187.12, courtesy of two fifties and a hundred, but he is the only batter to cross the 400-run mark this season.
With the ball, Afghanistan spinner Allah Ghazanfar has scalped 15 wickets in 11 matches at an economy rate of 10.01 runs per over. Corbin Bosch has also been impressive in just 6 appearances, scalping 12 wickets at an economy rate of 9.66 runs per over.
Mayank’s take on MI’s torrid IPL 2026
Over the years, MI have proven to be one of the most consistent sides in the IPL — reaching the final stages of the tournament at will. Even last season, they reached Qualifier 2 under Hardik Pandya.
In underperforming seasons like these, many cracks come to the fore. Their best players, who recently even won the T20 World Cup, failed to live up to expectations. Several playing XI-worthy names like Mitchell Santner and Quinton de Kock were ruled out, while Rohit Sharma missed some matches as well.
Some areas showed their over-reliance on the star performers from yesteryears. However, with how MI has operated for years, fans can stay calm and trust the management to sort things out soon and fill the holes in the team after this season.
