The IPL is known for its entertaining, thrilling matches, with a focus on innovative rules. Over the years, several IPL rules have grabbed attention, including the impact player rule and the timed-out rule.

One such important rule that has also been in the limelight is the concussion substitute rule, which was introduced to ensure player safety during matches.

In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, three concussion substitute incidents have already taken place. The first came during the MI vs CSK clash when Shardul Thakur replaced Mitchell Santner.

In the second incident, fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was replaced by Vipraj Nigam in a match between DC vs PBKS on April 25.

The third incident happened in Match 65 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, where Tejasvi Dahiya replaced Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

What is the concussion substitute rule In IPL?

The concussion substitute rule was introduced to protect players who suffer head or neck injuries during a match.

According to the IPL playing conditions, a team can replace a player who has suffered a confirmed or suspected concussion.

If a player suffers a concussion during the game, once approved by the match referee, a substitute can replace the injured player.

However, the replacement must be a 'like-for-like' substitute.

1. Vishnu Vinod For Ishan Kishan - IPL 2023

Wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod became the first-ever concussion substitute in IPL history during Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023 between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans.

Ishan Kishan (currently playing for SRH in IPL 2026) suffered a concussion after an accidental collision with Chris Jordan while fielding. Jordan's elbow struck Ishan Kishan near the left eye, forcing the MI opener off the field after medical evaluation.

Vishnu Vinod was approved as the replacement and entered the match as a like-for-like wicketkeeper-batter substitute.

2. Yudhvir Singh For Mohsin Khan - IPL 2024

The second concussion substitute in IPL history came during IPL 2024 in the match between Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders at the Ekana Stadium.

Pacer Mohsin Khan suffered a scary head injury while attempting a diving catch in the outfield. He landed awkwardly on his head while fielding at short third man and immediately walked off the field for treatment.

After medical checks, Mohsin Khan was ruled out due to concussion protocols. Fast bowler Yudhvir Singh was then introduced as the approved replacement.

3. Ashwani Kumar For Corbin Bosch - IPL 2025

In IPL 2025, another concussion substitute incident took place during the MI vs GT match at the Wankhede Stadium.

All-rounder Corbin Bosch was struck on the helmet by a sharp bouncer from GT pacer Prasidh Krishna. Although Corbin Bosch completed his short cameo with the bat, he later showed signs of concussion during the medical assessment.

As a result, Mumbai Indians brought in left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar as a substitute.

4. Shardul Thakur for Mitchell Santner - IPL 2026

The first IPL 2026 concussion substitutions happened when Shardul Thakur replaced Mitchell Santner in the MI vs CSK clash.

Santner injured himself while taking a diving catch in the deep during the 17th over. Although the injury initially appeared to involve his shoulder, Mumbai Indians later clarified that Santner's head and neck had also made contact with the ground during the fall.

Following approval from the match referee, Shardul Thakur entered the game as the replacement.

5. Vipraj Nigam For Lungi Ngidi - IPL 2026

Delhi Capitals pacer Lungi Ngidi suffered a serious head injury during the match between DC and PBKS in IPL 2026.

The incident happened when Lungi Ngidi tried to take a catch near the boundary. While attempting the catch, he lost balance and landed awkwardly on the back of his head and neck. The fall looked serious and the South African bowler was taken to the nearby hospital.

Following the injury, Vipraj Nigam came in as Ngidi’s concussion substitute for the rest of the match.

However, it is important to note that spinner Vipraj Nigam came in as a substitute because a team can have only four overseas players in the playing XI at any time. Delhi Capitals had already used all four overseas slots in their starting lineup.

6. Tejasvi Dahiya For Angkrish Raghuvanshi - IPL 2026

The latest concussion substitute came during Match 65 of IPL 2026 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi suffered a collision with teammate Varun Chakravarthy while fielding during MI's innings. He left the field shortly after the incident and was unable to continue in the game.

As a result, KKR introduced Tejasvi Dahiya as the concussion substitute.
