MS Dhoni for CSK - (Source: AFP)
The wait to see MS Dhoni in action during IPL 2026 has continued throughout the season, but the Chennai Super Kings have finally given a major update regarding MS Dhoni’s possible return in the ongoing cash-rich league.
It is important to mention that MS Dhoni was retained by CSK as an uncapped player before the season, but the legendary player has not played a single match this year. Initially, the 44-year-old was recovering from a calf strain.
However, earlier, Michael Hussey later revealed that Dhoni has also suffered a painful thumb injury, which ruled him out of the important clash against the SRH on May 18.
Michael Hussey issues fresh update on MS Dhoni's return
Ahead of CSK’s crucial league match against Gujarat Titans, CSK batting coach Michael Hussey confirmed that Dhoni could return to the squad, but only if Chennai qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, Hussey confirmed that Dhoni had already left for Ranchi and was not travelling with the team.

Speaking during the post-match presser, Hussey said, - "I can confirm he is not here with the team, but if we do happen to qualify, then he will definitely join back up with the team. He has got a bit of a sore thumb, so it is recovering nicely, but he would not be ready for this match. But hopefully, if we can manage to get through to the playoffs, then hopefully he will be alright."
Dhoni's absence continues to dominate IPL 2026 discussions
Even though MS Dhoni has not featured in any game this season, he remains the biggest talking point in the CSK camp.
It is vital to note that throughout the season, Dhoni avoided travelling for away matches with the team. The only exception came earlier this month when he travelled to Lucknow.
Several reports have also emerged that MS Dhoni has intentionally stayed out of the playing XI to allow younger players to gain more opportunities.
However, the CSK management consistently maintained that injuries are the primary reason behind his absence.
CSK face a tough qualification challenge
Chennai Super Kings now find themselves in a must-win situation in IPL 2026. After suffering a defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their previous game, CSK is at 7th place in the points table with 12 points from 13 matches.
Meanwhile, RCB, Gujarat Titans, and Sunrisers Hyderabad have already confirmed their playoff spots. Only one place remains available in the top four, and CSK are still mathematically alive in the race.
To qualify, CSK must first defeat Gujarat Titans in their final league game. A win would take them to 14 points and keep their hopes alive. However, they will also need favourable results from other matches to move into the fourth position.
If CSK fail to beat Gujarat Titans, their IPL 2026 campaign will officially come to an end.
