Salman Ali Agha could be replaced as PAK captain [Source: AFP]
Pakistan suffered a Super 8 elimination from the T20 World Cup 2026, as Sri Lanka's narrow defeat led to New Zealand's entry into the semifinal. Batting first, the Salman Ali Agha-led side posted a massive 212-run total on the board before restricting Sri Lanka to 207 in 20 overs.
Sri Lanka lost an early wicket in the form of Pathum Nissanka, while Kamil Mishara and Charith Asalanka failed to convert their starts into significant scores.
However, Dasun Shanaka stepped up to the occasion, slamming a magnificent half-century and knocking Pakistan out of the tournament.
As the Men in Green needed to win the contest by at least 65 runs, their five-run victory ensured New Zealand progressed to the T20 World Cup semifinal.
Pakistan's failure to qualify for the knockouts earned massive backlash for captain Salman Ali Agha, who was slammed from all corners of the world for tactical shortcomings. As the all-rounder's captaincy stint seems to be jeopardised, here are three potential options to replace him as Pakistan's new T20I skipper.
Shadab Khan
Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson is one of the close allies of veteran allrounder Shadab Khan, who leads the Islamabad United in the PSL. Shadab returned to the Pakistani T20I setup just before the T20 World Cup 2026, where he played a crucial role for the Men in Green.
The spin-bowling allrounder had a decent run in the tournament, scoring 118 runs and scalping five wickets. He has ample captaincy experience, having also led the Islamabad United to the title in the PSL 2023-24 season.

So, considering he has already worked with Mike Hesson in the PSL, Shadab Khan might emerge as a strong contender to replace Salman Ali Agha if the former is retained as the head coach.
Sahibzada Farhan
| Criterion | Data |

| Runs | 383 |
| Average | 76.60 |

(Sahibzada Farhan's T20 World Cup 2026 record)
Swashbuckling opening batter Sahibzada Farhan had a breakthrough T20 World Cup campaign, finishing the tournament as Pakistan's most successful batter.
The explosive right-hander oozed remarkable consistency, even breaking Virat Kohli's record for the most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition.
More importantly, Sahibzada Farhan stepped up as Pakistan's most reliable batter, whereas his teammates mostly struggled to thrive under challenging batting conditions in Sri Lanka.
Although Farhan has limited captaincy experience at the domestic level, his performances in the T20 World Cup could prompt the PCB to show faith in his abilities and give him full freedom to choose his assets to help Pakistan restore their glory at the international level.
Saim Ayub
In a bold move, the Pakistan team management might assign the leadership duties to the young Saim Ayub.
The promising cricketer brings immense all-round value to the table, as his incredible skillset makes him a vital cog in the Pakistani T20I setup.
Added to that, Saim Ayub has been an integral member of the Peshawar Zalmi, steadily nurturing his leadership credentials under Babar Azam's guidance.
As he is a regular name in the shortest format and has age on his side, Saim could be entrusted with the captaincy responsibilities as Pakistan seek redemption following their T20 World Cup exit.
