Matt Henry in T20 World Cup 2026 (Source:X)
New Zealand have been forced to rethink their bowling plans ahead of the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final after pacer Matt Henry flew home for the birth of his second child. The fast bowler left the squad after the Super 8 clash against England and is now in a race against time to return for the knockout stage.
Henry’s departure comes at a crucial stage of the tournament, with the Blackcaps already securing a spot in the semi-finals.
Will Matt Henry return for New Zealand's semi-final stage?
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter confirmed that while the team fully supports Matt Henry's decision, they are also preparing for the possibility that he may not return in time.
“Firstly, we’re all very excited for Matt and Holly on the arrival of their second child,” Walter said. “It’s a very significant moment for their family. We’re hoping everything goes smoothly, and if the stars align, he should be back the day before the semi-finals." Rob Walter said earlier.
Matt Henry's replacements revealed
However, with travel and timing dependent on the birth, New Zealand have two pacers as backup options, Jacob Duffy and Kyle Jamieson.
"Matt's home - safe and sound," New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said from Colombo. "We're dealing with nature - so we're first and foremost just hoping that everything goes off smoothly with the birth of his child and that he's able to celebrate that with his family.
"I mean, Jacob Duffy's been the one that missed out," Walter said. "He's been incredible for us over the last 18 months. So, it's tough enough leaving him out of the team, really. If it does work out that unfortunately Matt can't make it back, then absolutely [Duffy comes into contention]. [We have] very capable people sitting on the bench, Kyle Jamieson [for example]. So, we've got those bases covered, no doubt."

It is important to mention that Jacob Duffy is seen as the most direct replacement for Matt Henry. The right-arm seamer was left out of the playing XI in spin-friendly conditions earlier in the tournament.
Job Walter admitted that it was difficult to leave Jacob Duffy out in the first place and said he would be the front-runner if Henry remains unavailable.
Kyle Jamieson, meanwhile, provides height and bounce and could be a strong option depending on pitch conditions.
His ability to extract extra lift could prove valuable, especially if New Zealand play at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where the semi-final is scheduled.
Matt Henry's performance in T20 World Cup 2026
Matt Henry’s potential absence would be a big blow. The 34-year-old has been one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers in the tournament, picking up seven wickets in six innings.
He has maintained an impressive economy rate of 7.41, delivering crucial breakthroughs on difficult pitches.
If he is unable to return, New Zealand may also consider adjusting their balance by bringing in seam-bowling all-rounders, depending on conditions. However, the immediate focus remains on the two frontline pacers named as backups.
