Pakistan's campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 ended in disappointment, and the fallout has already begun. Following their exit from the tournament, sweeping changes are expected in the side by the PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, with captain Salman Ali Agha and star player Babar Azam at the centre of the storm.
Pakistan’s journey in the T20 World Cup came to an end despite a five-run victory over the Sri Lanka in their final Super 8 match.
The win was not enough to take them into the semi-finals, as they failed to improve their net run rate and finished third in Group 2.
Mohsin Naqvi unhappy after Pakistan's T20 World Cup exit
According to reports (PTI), the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB is extremely unhappy with the team's performance. This marks Pakistan's third consecutive failure to reach the semi-finals of a T20 World Cup.
A source close to the PCB revealed that Mohsin Naqvi had been assured by the selectors and the team management that the squad was fully prepared for a strong showing. However, the results did not meet expectations, leading to frustration at the top level.
"Naqvi is not happy at all because this time he was assured by the selectors, team management and his close aides that the team was set to do well in the World Cup," a reliable source said (PTI).
Mohsin Naqvi to make massive changes after Pakistan's T20 World Cup flop
Pakistan captain Salman Agha is reportedly set to be removed from T20I captaincy, regardless of the team’s final results in the tournament.
Reports indicate that the decision is almost finalised, and discussions will soon take place among Mohsin Naqvi, head coach Mike Hesson, and the selectors.

Senior players, including Babar Azam, could face an uncertain future in the T20 format. The PCB leadership, led by Mohsin Naqvi, is reportedly considering a transition phase, focusing on younger talent and adapting to the fast-changing demands.
"Salman, Babar Azam, Usman Khan and a few others could see curtains fall on their T20 international careers after the World Cup," the source stated (PTI).
“After the World Cup, you can expect major changes in Pakistan’s T20 set-up,” the source added.
Reports also stated that the Naqvi wants to build a long-term strategy rather than continue with short-term fixes.
Potential captaincy replacements if Salman Agha is removed
Reports suggest that Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi are among the frontrunners to replace Salman Agha as captain.
Coach Mike Hesson has reportedly advised the board that Pakistan must move on from certain senior players and invest in youth if they want to compete consistently with top teams.
Pakistan’s campaign had its ups and downs in the T20 World Cup 2026. They defeated the Netherlands, USA, and Namibia in the group stage to qualify for the Super 8.
However, a league-stage loss to India once again highlighted the gap between the two rivals in ICC tournaments.
In the Super 8 stage, Pakistan’s opening match against New Zealand was washed out, followed by a narrow defeat to England.
Even though they managed to beat Sri Lanka in their final game, they needed to restrict the opposition to 147 or fewer to overtake New Zealand on net run rate. They failed to do so and were eliminated.
