England consigned Team India to a humiliating nine-wicket defeat in the fourth T20I to take a 3-0 lead in the five-match series. Sealing the series with a game to spare, England also ensured that Shreyas Iyer continues to remain winless as India’s T20I captain.
English opener Phil Salt and captain Harry Brook rained down scintillating half-centuries in the run chase to make lightwork of India’s competitive 158-run total at the County Ground in Bristol on Thursday, July 9.
The outcome helped the hosts secure some monumental records in the process, with Team India attaining some unwanted ones with their latest setback.

Team India lost the match to England with 37 balls in hand, thus marking their biggest margin of defeat in terms of number of balls remaining while defending 150-plus totals in T20I cricket. Incidentally, India’s previous biggest defeat also occurred against England, back in the semifinal of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

The England cricket team also levelled up with West Indies’ 2024 effort through their nine-wicket win over India with 37 balls remaining. Previously, only two teams have recorded bigger wins in T20I cricket while chasing targets of 150 or more in the format, in matches involving two member nations.

India suffers third biggest defeat in T20Is
Just a couple of days after sustaining its biggest defeat in T20Is in terms of runs, Team India has now suffered its third-best defeat in the format in terms of number of balls remaining.
Indian cricket team’s two biggest defeats under the scenario have both occurred against Australia, in 2008 and 2025 respectively. Here is a look at three of India’s biggest defeats in T20Is after batting first.

Other records broken with England’s series win vs India
The England cricket team has now registered its first-ever T20I series win over India, either home or away, in a series with a minimum of two matches. Previously, the ‘Men in Blue’ won five of the previous six bilateral T20I series between the two sides, with one yielding a drawn result.
Team India has also registered its first-ever series defeat to England, regardless of the format, since losing the Test series and ODI series way back in mid-2018.
Harry Brook bulldozes Shreyas Iyer’s India as England seal series
India batted first and slipped to 48-3 before captain Shreyas Iyer punched out an elegant 80* off 49 balls. His innings helped the visitors rack up a competitive 20-overs total of 158-7.
For England, fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue both picked up two wickets each in the innings.
In response, England lost opener Jos Buttler for just eight in the third over. However, Phil Salt minted 59* runs off 42 balls while captain Harry Brook smeared 79* off just 35 deliveries to blaze the Englishmen past India’s total in just 13.5 overs.
With series already in England’s pocket, the hosts will now take on India in the dead-rubber fifth T20I of the five-match series on July 11 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.
