India have enjoyed plenty of success in T20Is over the years. However, like every top team, the Men in Blue has also faced some heavy defeats.
These losses have come against strong opponents who outplayed India with both bat and ball. Moreover, such matches have served as valuable lessons for the team. Here is a look at India's biggest defeats in T20I history.
Team India's Biggest Defeats in T20Is
5. Lost by 50 Runs vs New Zealand (Vizag, 2026)
India's fifth-biggest T20I defeat came against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam. New Zealand posted a challenging 215/7 after Tim Seifert and Devon Conway gave them a flying start, while Daryl Mitchell finished strongly.
Notably, India's chase began poorly with early wickets. Nevertheless, Shivam Dube produced a stunning 65 off 23 balls to keep hopes alive.
However, Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi struck at important moments, and India were eventually bowled out for 165, losing by 50 runs.

4. Lost by 51 Runs vs South Africa (Chandigarh, 2025)
India also endured a 51-run defeat against South Africa in Chandigarh. Quinton de Kock's explosive 90 helped the visitors reach a commanding 213/4.
While Tilak Varma scored an impressive 62 and Hardik Pandya added useful runs, India's chase never truly gained momentum.
More importantly, South Africa's fast bowlers dominated the closing stages as India lost their last five wickets for just five runs and were dismissed for 162.
3. Lost by 76 Runs vs South Africa (Ahmedabad, 2026)
South Africa handed India a 76-run defeat in Ahmedabad, ending India's impressive unbeaten run in the T20 World Cup 2026. Despite losing early wickets, South Africa recovered well through Dewald Brevis, David Miller and Tristan Stubbs to post 187/7.
In contrast, India's batting struggled from the very beginning. Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma were dismissed cheaply. Notably, Shivam Dube fought hard with 42 runs, but he lacked support from the other end. Eventually, India were bowled out for 111.
2. Lost by 80 Runs vs New Zealand (Wellington, 2019)
Earlier, India suffered an 80-run defeat against New Zealand in Wellington. Batting first, the hosts piled up 219/6 after Tim Seifert smashed 84 and Kane Williamson played a quick-fire knock. Ross Taylor also contributed valuable runs towards the end.
Although Shikhar Dhawan started positively during the chase, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Furthermore, New Zealand's bowlers Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson and Mitchell Santner maintained constant pressure, preventing any recovery.
Consequently, India failed to challenge the target and suffered a heavy defeat of 80 runs.
1. Lost by 125 Runs vs England (Nottingham, 2026)
India recorded their biggest-ever T20I defeat when England thrashed them by 125 runs at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
England posted a massive 201/7, thanks to Phil Salt's brilliant 70 off 44 balls. Sam Curran added an unbeaten 41, while Jos Buttler chipped in with 36. For India, debutant Prince Yadav impressed with two wickets.
In reply, India's batting completely collapsed. The visitors were bowled out for just 76 in 11.4 overs, narrowly avoiding their lowest T20I total.
Josh Tongue claimed four wickets, while Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid shared five between them. As a result, England secured a record-breaking victory and took a 2-0 lead in the ENG vs IND series.
