Shreyas Iyer Reacts As India Loses T20I Series [Source: AFP]
India lost the 4th T20I against England by 9 wickets, thus losing the 5-game series as the hosts took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series. Following the humiliating defeat at Bristol, captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that the batting unit didn’t perform at par.
The fourth T20I began with India opting to bat first and failing to capitalise on it. Only Shreyas Iyer scored an unbeaten 80 runs while the rest of the squad collapsed as the men in blue managed to get just 158 runs on the board.
Shreyas Iyer uses the transition phase as an excuse
Meanwhile, in the chase, England cruised as Harry Brook and Phil Salt stitched a 146-run partnership for the second wicket. The duo helped England achieve the chase in 13.5 overs to seal a 9-wicket dominant victory.
After the loss, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer blamed the batting unit, saying the 158-run total was never enough.
"Again, disappointing. 158 was not the perfect total on the board and we saw with how quickly they chased it down," Iyer said.
Moreover, when India took the field, Iyer apparently instructed his bowlers to stick to disciplined lengths. However, the bowlers changed their pace too often and missed lengths while trying too many variations.
"(What did he tell the bowlers?) When we came on to bowl, I asked the bowlers to repeat their lengths. (Deliveries on the) top of middle and leg (stump) were tough to hit and score boundaries off. When we changed pace and tried different things, they scored boundaries," he added.

Iyer rates his performance at Bristol
While Team India lost the 4th T20I, Shreyas Iyer had a successful outing as a batter. Coming out to bat at no. 4, the skipper scored 80* off 49 balls. It was only due to his knock that India even managed to get past the 150-run mark. However, Iyer made it clear that personal milestones don't matter if the team loses.
"(About his own performance) Happy with my performance, but if it is not on the winning cause, it goes to the the side. I want my team to win."
Also, Shreyas Iyer used the transition phase as an excuse, saying the players are bound to make mistakes. He later expressed confidence that the younger players would respond positively.
"(On the learnings from this series and about the remaining game) This is the transition phase, We will be making a lot of mistakes. There will be mistakes, but it is about learning quickly and adapting to the overseas conditions. I am sure that there are quick learners in the team and they will bounce back soon."
India lose second consecutive series under Iyer’s captaincy
Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy era hit a new low as India lost the second consecutive T20I series under his reign. After dropping a historic series against Ireland, India lost 3 back-to-back games against England, thus losing the 5-game series.
This comes just months after India won the T20 World Cup 2026. However, the World Champions were humbled in no time. And the fact that this turnaround is happening under Iyer’s captaincy is raising a lot of questions.
India had dropped World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav to appoint Shreyas Iyer as skipper for the new era. However, that decision has flopped so far, and fans are wondering if the management made the right choice by trusting Iyer.
