Shreyas Iyer Nears Rohit Sharma's Historic T20I Record With 33-Ball Fifty Vs England

Shreyas Iyer started his T20I captaincy stint with a string of failures in the T20I series against Ireland, but in his second assignment (against England), the newly appointed Indian captain has been the batter to watch out for as he has been the lone warrior for the Men in Blue.

While most of the Indian batters have struggled to score runs on tricky English wickets, Iyer has been sublime in his approach as he registered a well-crafted fifty in the fourth T20I of the series.

He came in when India were in a dicey situation, and the batter scored his second fifty of the series to enter an elusive captains’ club.

Iyer played sensibly and slammed a 33-ball fifty to keep India in the game. In the process, the right-handed batter joined an elusive list comprising the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav.

This was his second fifty as T20I captain in the SENA nations, and he sits on the table alongside Kohli and Suryakumar, who have the same number of fifties as captain in SENA countries (2 each).

Rohit Sharma sits at the top of the table, and Iyer, who has recently started leading the team, has a chance to equal Rohit in the next game.

Suryakumar Yadav, another former skipper has 7 such scores, while KL Rahul, Gautam Gambhir, Abhishek Sharma, and Yuvraj Singh also have their names on the list.

How Shreyas Iyer has performed in the IND Vs ENG T20Is

Iyer entered the England series on the back of back-to-back failures against Ireland as he was under pressure to deliver.

In the rain-curtailed first T20I, the Indian skipper scored a gritty 68 runs, and it was followed by another quickfire 38 in the second game.

He failed to deliver the runs in the third T20I, but in a must-win match at Bristol, Iyer scored his second fifty of the series to once again silence his critics, and in the process, he also became the Indian captain with the highest-ever T20I score against England (80*).
