On Thursday night at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India clinched a T20 World Cup epic against England by 7 runs to qualify for the final of the 2026 edition of the tournament. This marks India’s fourth consecutive appearance in ICC white-ball event finals since 2023 and gives them a unique opportunity to defend their 2024 title.
The semi-final win against the Harry Brook-led England also marks a significant achievement for India in multi-nation ICC events, where they have surpassed Australia to make it to the most finals. In recent years, the two teams have gone toe-to-toe in this race, and India will bag the bragging rights for leading the race, at least till the World Cup 2027.
India topples Australia to reach the most ICC finals
Having only lost one match in the ongoing tournament at home, India looked in cruise control of the first innings of their semi-final encounter against England, racking up 253/7 in 20 overs. They also reduced England to 95/4, but Jacob Bethell’s century turned the match into a nail-biter. However, the hosts managed to pull off a 7-run win.
This will mark India’s fourth T20 World Cup final appearance, having won two and lost one previously. With this, they go past Australia’s tally of 14 finals after the Men in Blue had levelled them during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. On the other hand, New Zealand levelled West Indies’ 8 finals and are joint-fourth in the list.

How has India performed in ICC finals?
So far, India have had a topsy-turvy luck in the finals of ICC events. In 14 matches across formats, they have won 6 finals and lost 7. The final of the ICC Champions Trophy was washed out on both the match day and the reserve day, and they shared the trophy with Sri Lanka in 2022.
They clinched trophies in the World Cup 1983 and 2011, beating West Indies and Sri Lanka, respectively. In the T20 World Cups, they won in 2007 against the arch-rivals Pakistan and repeated the feat in 2024 against South Africa.
In the Champions Trophy, they have shared the 2002 edition with Sri Lanka, followed by the 2013 win over England and the 2025 win against the Kiwis.
Breakdown of India’s ICC finals by events:

India eyes historic title-defence against New Zealand
Up next, the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian outfit will head towards Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium to face New Zealand in the final of the competition.
To reach the final, the Blackcaps battered the most in-form team, South Africa, by restricting them to 169/8 in 20 overs. They went on to chase the score down in only 12.5 overs, courtesy of 100* (33) for Finn Allen and 58 (33) for Tim Seifert.
No other team in the T20 World Cups have ever defended their title before, and neither has any side lifted the prized trophy three times. While New Zealand will come into the final in pursuit of their first title, India will try to break multiple records on Sunday evening.
