Pakistan veteran Mohammad Amir has been in the headlines for analysing India’s fate in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Other than scissoring India’s chances for the road to the final, Amir has also dissected Abhishek Sharma’s form while calling him 'just a slogger'.

Mohammad Amir's comments on India have gained traction because of his furious claims and bold remarks on Indian batters. However, in the context of the current scenario, it seems like Abhishek Sharma's fate has been correctly predicted by the ex-Pakistan pacer.

Mohammad Amir Differentiates Between Bilaterals And T20 World Cup

Speaking to a local Pakistani media, Amir replied to the host asking his opinion on how he destroyed Abhishek's career with 'slogger' comment.

Amir pointed out that the pressure, planning, and scrutiny in ICC events are on a completely different level, often exposing weaknesses that may not be noticed in regular bilateral series and hence, it's not the comment but the situation that led to Sharma's downfall.

Highlighting the fundamental difference between bilateral contests and global tournaments, Amir stressed that teams approach ICC events with far more detailed preparation.

"Look, there is a huge difference between playing a bilateral series and playing in ICC events. In a series, teams may not focus in the same intense way. They often think, “Alright, in this series we need to identify new players,” and that becomes their main objective. Because of that, they might not mark or analyse players as strictly," Mohammad Amir said.

Amir Explains Reason Behind Abhishek Sharma’s Failure

Amir further explained that teams study every player, identifying both strengths and technical vulnerabilities of them. According to him, this level of analysis often puts younger players like Abhishek under immense pressure.

"But when you play in ICC events, every team studies every player very closely. By then, everyone knows a player’s strengths and weaknesses. Take Abhishek for example, teams already know which areas he is strong in and where he struggles. If you notice, he sometimes gets trapped by off-spinners, and when fast bowlers keep targeting his body with short balls, he struggles for a while," Amir added.

The former Pakistan quick also emphasised that succeeding in high-profile tournaments requires more than just natural talent.

"So in international cricket, especially in big tournaments, you need to be technically sound and mentally very strong to perform consistently."

Mohammad Amir Praises Sanju Samson

Amir then contrasted Sharma’s struggles with the performances of Indian batter Sanju Samson, who has impressed in the tournament with his versatile shot-making and consistent approach.

"Now look at Sanju Samson, why is he performing? If you look at his background, first check his technique, then his first-class career, and then his IPL career. He can play shots all around the ground," the pacer added.

Abhishek Sharma Needs To Play 360 Cricket

Speaking about the evolving nature of T20 cricket, Mohammad Amir noted that players who rely on limited scoring areas or specific matchups are increasingly finding it difficult to succeed at the highest level.

"A one-dimensional player simply cannot survive in T20 cricket anymore. I said this at the beginning as well, that kind of player won’t succeed now. You must be able to play all kinds of bowling and score in every area."

Concluding his analysis, Amir reiterated that modern T20 cricket demands complete batters, unlike Abhishek Sharma, who can score freely around the ground, regardless of the type of bowling they face.

"That is the key now, you must be able to score all around the ground. One-dimensional players cannot survive in modern cricket. You need to be able to play everywhere," Mohammad Amir concluded.

Sharma's Woeful World Cup Campaign

Abhishek Sharma's campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 has been more than woeful. After a successful New Zealand series where he averaged 45.50 from five matches, Sharma has scored only 89 runs at an average of 12.71 from his seven appearances in this tournament.

He has only three double-digit scores, along with three ducks to his name, underlining his sudden downfall from being the number one T20I batter in the world.
