Days of nervous wait for the West Indies could soon come to an end after they found themselves stranded in India despite getting knocked out of the T20 World Cup.

The two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain and West Indies head coach, Daren Sammy, was also seen asking for a quick resolution of the situation so the team could head back home. Due to the ongoing war-like situation in the Middle East, the airspace has been closed, which also saw Zimbabwe getting stuck after the Super 8.

West Indies to fly back home after Sammy’s plea

On Thursday afternoon, the West Indies legend, Sammy, took to his Twitter and wrote, “I just want to go home,” after already waiting for a couple of days, having suffered a defeat to India in the virtual quarter-final. Later on, he asked, expressing further frustration, asking for an update, since it had been five days since the squad was left stranded in India.

According to Sportstar’s sources in ICC, the Caribbean camp has now received an update regarding their flight back home. They are now set to board a direct charter flight to Antigua in the foreseeable future. However, the date and time of the said flight are yet to be known.

Sammy once again took to Twitter in the evening and clarified that they received the latest update and conveyed that it is all that they needed to know amid uncertainty.

Promising T20 World Cup for West Indies

Before bowing out of the competition, courtesy of a Sanju Samson special at the Eden Gardens, the West Indies enjoyed a great campaign in India. They came into the tournament as the dark horses after only winning three of the 11 series since the 2024 edition of the tournament.

Throughout the group stage, they remained unbeaten and booked a spot in the Super 8 alongside India, South Africa and Zimbabwe. They also posted a mammoth 254/6 against Zimbabwe in the Super 8 to send shockwaves through the tournament.

However, they went on to suffer back-to-back losses to South Africa and India and crashed out of the tournament. According to many, their wins over England and Zimbabwe and a close game against India was a promising sign for cricket in the region after years of underperformances.

Shimron Hetmyer scored 248 runs in 7 games, striking at 186.46 with two fifties. With the ball, Gudakesh Motie and Jason Holde picked 10 wickets each as their best performers.

India and England eye history as West Indies head home

Ahead of the 2026 edition, the defending champions, India, 2010 and 2022 champions England and 2012 and 2016 champions West Indies were the only teams with two titles to their name. As the West Indies crash out of the tournament, the only two remaining teams will have a chance to lift their record third T20 World Cup.

As India face England in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, one of these sides will have a golden opportunity when they face New Zealand in the final on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
