The IPL 2026 preparations for the Punjab Kings opener, Priyansh Arya, have been going to perfection as he rocked up in the DY Patil T20 trophy in emphatic form. Representing DY Patil Red on Wednesday evening against DTDC, in the quarter-final of the competition, he scored 76 in just 29 and put his team in the final four of the tournament in Navi Mumbai.

This serves as crucial news for the PBKS camp as the 24-year-old will be crucial to their chances in IPL 2026, as their wait to lift the first league title continues. This swashbuckling innings came after his unbeaten 101 off 41 in the previous fixture against CGST in a successful chase of 150 runs in 12.1 overs.

Arya’s explosive 76 puts DY Patil Red in the semi-final

Having spent the off-season with the legendary left-hand batter, Yuvraj Singh, he started the DY Patil T20 tournament with 8 fours and 9 sixes in his knock of 101. On Wednesday, Priyansh Arya opened the innings for DY Patil Red on March 4 against DTDC and took the aggressive route.

Batting alongside Atharva Kale, he stitched an 84-run partnership for the first wicket in only 5.5 overs before getting out to Shreyas Gaurav. In the 84 runs in 5.5 overs, Arya farmed the strike and got 10 fours and 5 towering sixes in just 27 minutes and finished the knock with 76 off 29, giving a headstart to his team.

Later on, Kale took over from where Arya left and finished 56(38), followed by several middle-order cameos as they reached 226/5 in 20 overs.

The Bhuvneshwar Kumar-led bowling attack was belted for runs, but managed to restrict DTDC for 212/7 in 20 overs. Captain Krunal Pandya, who got 9 (10) with the bat, picked 3/50 in his 4 overs, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished with 1/34. They won the match by 14 runs, and Arya was named the Player of the Match.

They have now joined DY Patil Blue, Canara Bank and Mumbai Customs in the semi-final.

Priyansh Arya's promising form big boost for PBKS

The IPL 2025 campaign proved instrumental in Arya's growth after his Delhi Premier League blitz over recent years. At the top of the order with Prabhsimran Singh, he scored 475 runs at a brilliant strike rate of 179.24 with two fifties and a hundred, giving big starts to them on their way to their only second final appearance.

With the 2026 season just weeks away, Arya has scored 177 runs in the last two innings at a strike rate of 252.85 for DY Patil Red in their matches in Navi Mumbai. Having succeeded in the first season, the second seasons are often considered testing for any player with the amount of data and analysis available.

The southpaw will once again be a key member of the Shreyas Iyer-led outfit, as they will look to replicate the 2025 performances and go a step further.

Eyes on Arya’s development in IPL 2026

Currently, the Indian cricket circuit is rich with talented openers, especially in the T20 format. Currently, another Yuvraj Singh student, Abhishek Sharma is leading the race, and someone like Yashasvi Jaiswal is struggling to find a place in T20Is.

Much like the other Yuvraj Singh apprentice in Abhishek, Arya, Prabhsimran, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre, among others, will be under the scanner after showing promise in their young careers.

As India looks to build towards the T20 World Cup 2028 and the subsequent Olympic Games, it will be crucial for him to build on his first season and replicate the DPL and DY Patil T20 form in IPL 2026.

If he is able to help PBKS lift their first title, he could also leapfrog the competitors and get into the scheme of things after already playing numerous matches for India A in recent times.
