The ‘Captain’s Carnival’ of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 took place in England on Sunday, June 7.
Captains of all 12 participating teams gathered together for the ICC ceremony, including Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana.
ICC chairman Jay Shah also attended the event and interacted with several captains in the lead-up to the multi-nation T20 event. Interestingly, at one stage of the meet and greet, Shah also shook hands with Fatima Sana.
Both India and Pakistan fans were quick to react as the moment went viral on social media.
Fans react as Jay Shah “ends handshake feud” with Pakistan
ICC chairman Jay Shah shook hands with Fatima Sana on Sunday at the ‘Captain’s Carnival’ event of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Fans from Pakistan and India took note of the occasion, with several of them questioning Shah for casually ending India’s no handshake policy with their cross-border neighbours and geo-political rivals.

While several Pakistan fans called out ‘hypocrisy’ on part of the Indian cricket administrator, many Indian fans were of the opinion that Shah had to treat every captain equally since he is an ICC representative. Here is a look at how some of the fans reacted to Jay Shah’s handshake with Pakistan Women's captain Fatima Sana.
Background of India’s ‘no handshake’ policy
Last year, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav as well as his teammates refused to interact or shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts at the 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE. The Indian cricket team took the extreme step in light of the Pahalgam terrorist attack that took place earlier that year, which took the lives of innocent Indian civilians.
Indian players also refused to collect the 2025 Asia Cup trophy from PCB chairman and ACC president Mohsin Naqvi at the winner’s podium.
Team India’s ‘no handshake’ policy was also visible during the crucial Group A match between the two sides at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Colombo back in February this year.
However, despite shaking hands with Fatima Sana in his capacity as ICC chairman and representative of the global governing body, Jay Shah's gesture sparked fresh debate among fans given India’s recent no-handshake stance towards Pakistan.
