England started their 2026 summer with a bang, beating New Zealand by 115 runs in the first Test at Lord’s on Sunday. However, the famous venue also ended up scripting an unwanted record as bowlers dominated proceedings from the very beginning.

The seaming conditions on offer made batting a difficult task throughout the match. As a result, the Lord's Test finished at a remarkable pace, placing the first Test of the three-match series in an unwanted category.

England Crush New Zealand By 115 Runs To Take Series Lead

England endured a tough start to the Lord's Test after being bowled out for just 140 in the first innings. However, the hosts quickly turned the contest around with a disciplined bowling display that wrestled back control.

Led by a five-wicket haul from Ollie Robinson, England made full use of the seaming conditions as New Zealand were dismissed for just 113 in reply. The effort handed the hosts a valuable first-innings lead despite their batting struggles.

England then produced a better batting display in the second innings to set New Zealand a target of 226. The visitors never looked comfortable in the chase and were eventually bowled out for 138, sealing a 115-run defeat.

ENG vs NZ First Test At Lord's Records Second-Shortest Match In Venue History

The opening Test between England and New Zealand entered the record books after lasting just around 167 overs across four days. Remarkably, this came despite significant rain interruptions on Day 3, with the contest likely to have finished even earlier had play not been lost to the weather.

England's victory by 115 runs over New Zealand made it the second-shortest men's Test ever played at Lord's. The challenging surface offered plenty of assistance to the seamers throughout the contest, resulting in regular wickets and preventing either batting lineup from settling.

Only one Test in Lord's history has finished quicker. That came in 1888 when England defeated Australia by an innings and 21 runs in a match lasting just 132 overs and ending on the second day, leaving the ENG vs NZ, 2026 clash second on the list.

ENG vs NZ Lord's Historic Test Delivers Both Sweet And Bitter Records

Lord's created history by becoming the first cricket ground in the world to host 150 men's Tests, further cementing its status as the Home of Cricket. Yet the landmark occasion also produced an unwanted statistical record.

The England-New Zealand clash became the second-shortest men's Test ever played at the venue, lasting only around 167 overs. The lively surface remained a major talking point throughout the match as bowlers consistently enjoyed the upper hand.

Weather interruptions also played their part, with rain wiping out substantial time on Day 3.

Despite that lost play, the contest still finished remarkably quickly, leaving fans and experts debating the conditions long after England's much-needed victory, considering their position in World Test Championship Table.
