Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could become the youngest Indian debutant if he plays in the upcoming T20I series against Ireland. There was so much hype surrounding the teenager, and the BCCI selectors made a bold call by picking him for the T20Is against Ireland and England.
He was the star player in the IPL, sweeping up numerous awards and being crowned the best player of the tournament. Hence, as a result, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel couldn’t resist and immediately drafted him into the T20I squad, and now, Sooryavanshi has a chance to create history on the upcoming tour.
BCCI reveals Sooryavanshi's India jersey number
The 15-year-old has already joined the senior Indian side as the Men in Blue will depart for Ireland in three different batches. Ahead of the departure, the BCCI released a special video, featuring Sooryavanshi, wherein they revealed his India jersey number.
The BCCI gave a sneak peek into how Sooryavanshi would look in an India jersey, and as expected, the 15-year-old was overwhelmed as he became emotional.
In the video released, Team India’s throwdown specialist, Raghu, knocked on Sooryavanshi’s hotel room door and presented him with the biggest gift of his life, the Blue Indian jersey, with number three written behind it.
Here’s what the youngster said after receiving the gift: “Words cannot explain it. The reason I picked up a bat from day one and went to the cricket ground for practice, today that dream was fulfilled. The biggest step towards that journey was completed today.
I truly cannot put this feeling into words. I felt like a dream. The moment I saw that T-Shirt, I couldn’t stop smiling. Sometimes, something happens that you never even imagined could happen. And when it finally does, you don’t know how to react. That was exactly how I felt,” he said."
Why BCCI took a gamble on Sooryavanshi for the UK tour?
The southpaw scored 252 runs in seven IPL 2025 games as he announced his arrival in style. However, many felt Sooryavanshi could well turn out to be a one-season wonder, but even that theory was proven wrong by the youngster.

He took the IPL 2026 by storm by smashing 776 runs in 16 games, at an astonishing strike rate of 237.31. Moreover, the batter struck five fifties and a solitary hundred to become the leading run-getter of IPL 2026.
None of the big bowlers were able to find a way to dismiss him as the left-handed player dominated the best in the business. The UK tour was a perfect opportunity to unleash him, and the selectors immediately picked him.
Will Sooryavanshi make his debut in 1st T20I against Ireland?
After a stellar India A tri-series tournament finale, Sooryavanshi has been tipped to make his senior India debut in the first T2OI against Ireland. On paper, the teenager should don the jersey in the first game of the series, but he has two roadblocks.
Abhishek Sharma, the hard-hitting opener is almost untouchable, and India will be eager to have him pair alongside Sooryavanshi for the Ireland T20Is.
On the other hand, there is Sanju Samson, who became the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup, and scored runs in the IPL 2026 as well. Hence, the team management needs to find a way to incorporate Sooryavanshi into the starting lineup for the Ireland series.
