Suryakumar Yadav to stay at MI [Source: AFP]
The Mumbai Indians have been at the centre of trade rumours ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, with several players, including Hardik Pandya, heavily linked with moves away from the franchise.
Following the season, Suryakumar Yadav's place was also under the scanner due to his dropping form.
The host of potential changes is due to the consistently poor results in the ongoing cycle. MI finished outside the playoff spots twice in the last three seasons, and with Suryakumar Yadav already out of the Indian squad, MI have decided on his future as well.
MI close doors on Suryakumar Yadav's trade
Following the end of IPL 2026, where Suryakumar Yadav recorded his worst season with the bat since 2017, he has been rumoured to be traded out of the team.
There have been no concrete links to any franchise, but with teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants needing a new captain, the 36-year-old emerged as a potential candidate.
However, despite the rumours, according to Vijay Tagore of Cricbuzz, MI do not want to let go of Suryakumar Yadav, who has also previously led the team as a stand-in captain. This means Yadav will end the ongoing three-year cycle with the five-time champions and potentially be released ahead of the next mega auction.
Suryakumar Yadav reaps rewards for consistency
Suryakumar Yadav initially made a name for himself at the Kolkata Knight Riders, where he was also a deputy to Gautam Gambhir; his fortunes changed at MI upon arrival in 2018. He received his first India call-up at 31, when he was with them, becoming the best T20 batter in the world at the time.
Since joining MI in 2018, Yadav went on to become their second-highest run scorer behind former skipper Rohit Sharma.
In 127 matches played, Surya has scored 4020 runs for the five-time champions, while also winning the 2019 and 2020 editions. What set him apart was his exemplary strike rate of 151.24, before it became normal.
In the aforementioned period, he is the 5th highest run-scorer in the IPL, and no other player has scored at a better strike rate than the T20 World Cup-winning Indian captain. As a result, despite a 270-run season, MI is looking to back the player for at least another year before heading into a new era.
Had his form not fallen off, he could have also been a candidate to become the new captain, having led them 5 times from 2023 to 2026, winning 2 and losing 3.
