Australia lost the high-profile Test series against South Africa 1-2 after initially taking the lead in the series. While they eyed revenge in the World Test Championship final, Aussies lost their spot in the top-2 of the table for the ongoing cycle.

Australia is an ageing unit, which also had some underperformers, and the series defeat further exposed some players under the scanner. Captain Pat Cummins shed light on potential changes in the squad ahead of the home summer.

Pat Cummins reflects on potential changes in Test squad

In the aftermath of the final Test at Newlands, Cape Town, Pat Cummins did not hold back and openly said that some players' underperformance needs to be addressed. Whether they change their methods or the personnel remains to be seen.

Speaking at the post-series press conference, Cummins asked the reporters for some time to debrief and decide on the course of action.

"I think it [discussing changes] is always the case after losing a series, and it’s probably fair. We lost two games in a row. It’s fair to be asking those questions; we’ll be asking them internally as well. We are a very good side, but I think we need to get a little bit better if we want to get back to No. 1," Cummins admitted to the press.

"So maybe that’s a change of style, maybe it’s a change of personnel in some instances. Give us a couple of weeks and work it out," he added.

What changes can be expected in the Australian squad?

Heading into the final day of the series, Australia were very much alive in the match. The 288-run target was not straightforward, but with 10 wickets in hand and a day left, it is seen as attainable in modern-day cricket.

However, the team capitulated and lost 7 wickets in the morning session, which included some loose shots and showed some players' low confidence. Marnus Labuschagne is very much on the exit ramp after a dreadful few years, as Steve Smith will return ahead of the New Zealand Test series.

Apart from Marnus, we could be seeing the ageing bowling attack being phased out. Nathan Lyon was outbowled by Simon Harmer in the series, and while the openers look locked for the time being, Travis Head's ideal position has evidently been number 5, so ideally they would eye to rope in a top-order batter.

Lastly, Beau Webster has also been underwhelming, and his spot seems to be under the scanner beyond the upcoming Trans-Tasman Test series. He may not travel to India for the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2027.
