Sometimes a captain does not need to scream in the dressing room. A few brutally honest words are enough to send a message out to the team. That is exactly what Shubman Gill did after Gujarat Titans were handed a 29-run defeat by Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-scoring thriller in IPL 2026.
Gujarat Titans came into the match knowing that a win would have sealed their place in the playoffs. Instead, they produced a fielding performance that was as messy as it could get.
Four catches went down out of which, three of them were absolute sitters. And their captain was in no mood to sugarcoat it.
“We didn’t deserve to win”: Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill called a spade a spade. Speaking after the match, the GT skipper admitted his side had let the game slip through their fingers.
“Dropping three sitters in a game like this, I don’t think we deserved to win this one.”
GT were chasing shadows from the moment they put down chance after chance. In a match where nearly 500 runs were scored, every opportunity mattered. Gujarat kept spilling them like hot potatoes.

4 dropped chances that cost GT dearly
The biggest beneficiary of GT’s butter fingers was Finn Allen. The Kiwi opener was dropped twice. First, Jason Holder failed to hold onto a difficult chance when Allen was on 14.
Then came the real howler. Mohammed Siraj, usually one of GT’s safest fielders, grassed a straightforward catch at long-on when Allen was on 33. It was the kind of chance coaches expect to be taken with eyes closed.
Allen made GT pay dearly. He went berserk and smashed 93 runs off just 35 balls, turning the Titans’ fielding errors into a personal highlight reel.
The misery did not end there. Cameron Green was dropped by Arshad Khan on 23, and Angkrish Raghuvanshi was put down by Washington Sundar at fine leg.
Both stayed unbeaten and scored half-centuries. When the inning concluded, KKR had piled up 247 runs, the highest total ever scored against Gujarat Titans in IPL history.
Shubman Gill's honest assessment
Shubman Gill admitted GT had done a decent job with the bat. Chasing 248, Gujarat managed 218/4, which on most nights would be considered a fighting effort. But the captain knew the real damage had already been done in the field.
“The pitch was good. The odd ball was stopping and sticking. We batted well to the score that we did. But our fielding could have been a lot better,” Shubman Gill stated.
Gill also reminded everyone that Gujarat pride themselves on maintaining high standards. And on this occasion, they were nowhere near them.
A timely wake-up call before the playoffs
Despite the loss, Shubman Gill refused to hit the panic button. He looked at the bigger picture and suggested it might be better to have one horror show now rather than in a knockout match.
“Best to have a game like this now than in the qualifiers.”
It was a classic captain’s response, frustrated, but still keeping one eye on the road ahead.
Gujarat Titans still sitting pretty
The defeat delayed GT’s playoff qualification, but it did not derail their campaign. They remain second on the IPL 2026 points table with 16 points and are still firmly in the driver’s seat.
Their next challenge comes against Chennai Super Kings on May 21 in Ahmedabad. If GT tighten up their fielding, they will still be one of the most dangerous teams heading into the business end of the tournament.
