Gujarat Titans have been a fascinating mystery since their debut season. Despite looking not the perfect side on paper, they consistently deliver victories, showcasing excellent strategy, depth, and perhaps the influence of top-notch support staff, including Ashish Nehra.
In IPL 2026, they stumbled initially, losing their first two matches. Yet, they bounced back impressively, winning seven of the next nine games, showing resilience and adaptability against strong opponents, including top teams like RCB and Punjab Kings.
Remarkably, they reversed earlier defeats, beating teams they had previously lost to, proving tactical growth. While Gujarat Titans appear vulnerable at times, cracking their code remains challenging. Here, we attempt to highlight weaknesses and strategies to exploit them.
Get the Top-Order Early
The clear and first strategy is always to get Gujarat Titans’ top order out as early as possible, ideally within the first 10 overs. Their top three batters score 68.28% of runs, the highest for any side. In defeats, this drops to 60.41%, still high but considerably lower.
GT’s middle-order averages just 17 in losses, the worst among all middle-orders in the tournament. The strategy is clear:
- dismiss the top three early,
- expose the middle-order for major part of the second half.
Otherwise Gujarat Titans become very difficult to bowl against. This requires the opposition’s bowling attack to be disciplined. Bringing in Jos Buttler early inside the powerplay makes things easier as well.
Their top-order isn’t as destructive as Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, or even RCB. Their strike-rate is around 156, and they hit the highest number of fours among all top-orders. The difference lies in simplicity and balance.

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are very different but complement each other. Sudharsan and Gill are extremely strong on the square of the wicket on the eyes, so making them play straight, especially Sudharsan, is key.
For Gill, bowl incoming deliveries if there’s help from the wicket; otherwise, keep the line top of off. With a high percentage of risk-free, cricketing shots, opposition bowlers must also remain simple and attack the body line.
Googly and Spin Strategies to Challenge Gujarat Titans
Another key strategy to challenge Gujarat Titans is forcing them to play across the line against spin. In IPL 2026, no team has lost more wickets than GT against spinners, highlighting this as a potential weakness.
If you have a quality googly spinner, playing them against GT can be highly effective. The top-order, especially Shubman Gill, is strong against left-arm spin, but bringing the ball in and forcing them to play across can create opportunities.
- Googly spinners like Ravi Bishnoi and Suyash Sharma have consistently taken wickets, with a total of nine against GT this season.
- Most dismissals came when GT batters played across, often trying to drag it toward the square of the wicket.
While GT’s top and lower-order can hit big straight against spin, bowlers who adjust length based on the batter’s footwork can contain them. With GT playing two of their next three games at Narendra Modi Stadium, featuring large square boundaries, teams must plan their spin strategy carefully.
Make GT Taste Their Own Medicine with the Bat
Gujarat Titans’ top-order uses a classic, old-school batting approach, no fancy or overly aggressive shots, relying on their strong bowling attack to do the job with the ball. To succeed against them, opposition batters must adopt the same principle: keep things simple.
In GT’s last three wins against Punjab Kings, RCB, and Rajasthan Royals, teams who tried to attack their new-ball bowlers aggressively collapsed early. GT currently boasts the best bowling average in the tournament at 23.86, with a strike-rate of 15.8.
- No team has taken more powerplay wickets than GT, 21 in total.
- Kagiso Rabada leads with 13 wickets at a 12.92 strike rate in the first six overs,
- while Mohammed Siraj has 8 wickets at a 7.73 economy.
- This deadly pace duo makes it difficult to play ultra-aggressively early on.
GT’s last two defeats against RCB and Mumbai Indians show the path to success. Virat Kohli led a controlled chase through the powerplay to secure a win, while Tilak Varma batted deep for a century to help Mumbai Indians topple GT at Narendra Modi Stadium.
The takeaway is clear. Batters must stick to basics, play a measured T20 game, and mirror GT’s own simplicity. Ultra-aggressive strategies often fail against them, consistent, risk-free shot selection and patience are the keys to outplaying Gujarat Titans with the bat.
