Update on Rohit Sharma's IPL future [Source: AP]
Mumbai Indians took on RCB in the IPL 2026 match at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday evening, and it was a night to forget for the five-time champions. They suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of the defending champions, and if that were not enough, their star batter, Rohit Sharma, sustained a hamstring injury and retired hurt.
Batting on 19 off 13, Rohit looked scratchy in the middle. With unbearable humidity in Mumbai, the opening batter looked uncomfortable, and after a discussion with the physio, the former MI captain decided to walk off the field.
Latest update reveals Rohit Sharma's injury status
After the MI Vs RCB game, Mumbai Indians batter Sherfane Rutherford stated that he is unsure about the seriousness of Rohit’s hamstring injury, but on Monday, a fresh report by Cricbuzz gave a sneak peak into the injury status of Rohit Sharma.
According to the report, the MI opener will undergo scans after suffering a hamstring injury on Sunday. His availability for the next IPL 2026 match against PBKS will depend on the scan results. However, it seems the franchise might take precaution, and Rohit might not feature against the Punjab Kings.
Before retiring hurt, the MI Vs RCB IPL match was halted for a while as the physio had a lengthy discussion with the opening batter. Rohit came back to play, but just after one delivery, he decided to walk off the field in pain.

Who replaces Rohit if MI opener misses match vs PBKS
Even at the age of 38, Rohit remains a vital cog for the former IPL winners. He gives them experience and also provides brisk starts with the bat. Hence, with just four matches into the new season, MI might not take a risk, and the batter could be on the sidelines for the PBKS clash.
All of MI’s best players are already playing in the main XI, and if Rohit is rested for the IPL match vs PBKS, the franchise could bring in Robin Minz into action. Minz might not open alongside Rickelton, and he is likely to play in the middle order.
In such a scenario, Naman Dhir could be promoted at the top as a pinch-hitter, with Minz slotting in the middle order.
Rohit's recent fitness regime fails to pay off
In the last 6 months, Rohit Sharma has transformed himself in terms of fitness level. He underwent a major physical transformation, reportedly losing 11-15 kgs before the IPL 2026.
With the 2027 World Cup in sight, and the management demanding fitter players, Rohit closely worked with Abhishek Nayyar to achieve a leaner physique. He worked closely on cardiovascular training and worked on core exercises to build stamina.
It was like the former Indian captain had transformed himself 360 degrees to play in the World Cup 2027, but during a gruelling MI Vs RCB match in a hot and humid Mumbai evening, his fitness failed to pay off as the player walked off the field due to an injury.
