Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and hosts Mumbai Indians put up a high-scoring exhibition in match number 20 of the IPL 2026 season. With an overall aggregate of over 450 runs in the match, the defending champions secured a comfortable win at the end despite Sherfane Rutherford’s late spirited fightback.

Incidentally, apart from entertaining a lively Wankhede crowd in Mumbai and millions of viewers across the world, the match also set an unprecedented record. The record, pertaining to runtime, even broke the trend set by India’s latest Bollywood blockbuster ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’.

Mumbai Indians vs RCB becomes longest IPL match

The match number 20 of the IPL 2026 season, played out between hosts Mumbai Indians and defending champions RCB in Mumbai on April 12, became the longest-running IPL match in the history of the tournament, without any interruption or Super Overs.

While the match commenced on its usual start time of 7:30 PM IST, it ran up until close to midnight to have an overall runtime of four hours and 22 minutes. To put that in perspective, Aditya Dhar’s blockbuster Bollywood spy-action flick ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ had a runtime of three hours and 50 minutes.

MI vs KXIP Super Over match still the longest

In terms of overall duration, the IPL 2020 match played between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in Dubai remains the longest in the history of the tournament, stretching to five hours and four minutes. However, that historic match required two Super Overs to decide the winner, with Punjab Kings sealing the deal in the second tie-breaker.

The IPL 2023 matches between Delhi Capitals and KKR, as well as between RCB and Gujarat Titans also had a longer runtime than the Mumbai Indians vs RCB thriller; but both those fixtures had a delayed start due to weather conditions.

The IPL 2023 final between CSK and Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, beats every single IPL match if all kinds of interruptions or delays are taken into account. The match concluded over 30 hours from the time when the first ball was bowled, considering constant rains in Ahmedabad took it to its reserved day.

MI vs RCB in Mumbai in IPL 2026: As it happened

Batting first in match 20 of the IPL 2026 season, RCB mounted 240-4 in 20 overs courtesy of an electrifying 36-ball 78 from firebrand opener Phil Salt. Virat Kohli also compiled 50 from 38 balls, while captain Rajat Patidar blasted 53 off just 20 deliveries. Tim David smeared 34* off 16 at the death to provide the slog overs impetus to the innings.

In response, Mumbai Indians reached a fighting 222-5 to fall 18 runs short of their target. Sherfane Rutherford made a quick 31-ball 71*, but a fighting spell from Krunal Pandya (1-26) eventually made the difference between the two sides.
