Once invincible, the five-time IPL winners, Mumbai Indians, have suffered another crushing loss in the ongoing IPL 2026. Hardik Pandya-led MIโs third consecutive defeat came at the hands of defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 18 runs at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
The high-octane game saw RCB set a massive 241-run target, keeping the home team under constant pressure. After early carnage by Phil Salt and Virat Kohli, Bengaluru captain Rajat Patidar slammed the final nail in the coffin with his 20-ball 53.
Chasing a mammoth total, Mumbai Indians looked to have a strong start with Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton opening. However, that didnโt last long as Mumbai never truly took control of the game, eventually finishing on 222/5.
Thus, the back-to-back defeats forced Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya to deliver a strong dressing room talk after the MI vs RCB game.
โTwo optionsโ: Dejected Hardik Pandya gives brutal reality check to MI teammates
In the dressing room after the match on Sunday, the captain, Hardik Pandya, addressed the MI squad, along with head coach Mahela Jayawardene. After the disappointing loss, Pandya urged the players to unite, introspect and come back stronger.
"Thinking from what MJ said, I think here there are two options we can do. One is go back in our rooms, go back into our cocoon spaces and try to figure it out. I know it's tough losing but let's learn... let's not get disappeared. But let's learn. It's always winning and learning, never losing. So let's do that. That's something which tonight after the game, once we go back to hotel, let's have a meal together, we'll talk about cricket. We'll talk about something else but we'll figure it out," Hardik said in the Mumbai Indians dressing room talk.

In the post-match presentation, Hardik Pandya pointed out, "We have a couple of days off from here and we will play again. (bat second the way to go here?) To be very honest, now a lot of things needs to be rethink. Definitely, it's not working. Couple of games we have won the toss, but maybe we need to see what other options we have as a batting group or bowling group. Looking at the kind of wicket it's playing, if we can bat as well, that would be good. We still need to play cricket, we still need to bat well, we still need to bowl well".
Will the masters at coming back stronger, MI, recover in time?
Positioned 8th on the IPL 2026 points table, Mumbai Indians will face a high-flying Punjab Kings in their next fixture on April 16.
It is worth noting that the Shreyas Iyer-led PBKS are coming fresh off a commanding win against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Playing at their home ground, Punjab won the game, chasing easily 220 with 6 wickets and 7 balls left.
Coming back to the Indians, as damning as that seems, IPL 2026 is still only four games into this season, and MI are past masters at recovering from poor starts. There's still every chance they can fight their way into the playoffs this year.
Even if they do pull that off, however, they might need to have some difficult conversations as they plan for the longer term.
