In a recent development, the Mumbai Cricket Association is now the first cricket association in India to introduce a Player Contract System for its domestic cricketers. The Apex Council of the state cricket body has approved the initiative, which will come into effect from the 2026-27 domestic season.

Thought of as a future-proof plan, the PCS will provide financial security and a professional structure to emerging Mumbai talent.

The contracts target senior team players who have not represented India or played in the IPL, with approximately 15-20 players expected to benefit initially. Contracts will be awarded based on performance, fitness benchmarks, and recommendations from the selection committee.

MCA Announces Landmark Pay Structure For Domestic Players

Under the approved framework, eligible players will be categorised into three grades with attractive annual retainers.

Grade
Salary Range (Per Annum)
Grade A₹12,00,000 – ₹20,00,000
Grade B₹8,00,000 – ₹12,00,000
Grade C₹8,00,000

In addition to the fixed annual contract fee, players will receive match fees, daily allowances, and performance-based incentives as per existing MCA policies.

The system has been designed to reward consistency, promote high fitness standards, and rally behind players who are real talents for the state.

This graded structure provides a clear career pathway and financial stability for talented domestic performers who often struggle with irregular income.

Objectives of the Initiative Taken By The MCA

The primary goals of the MCA’s player contract system are to provide financial stability to Mumbai’s domestic players, allowing them to focus fully on cricket without financial worries.

They will also help establish a structured, professional environment that meets international standards at the state level. The plan also proposes to encourage performance consistency and adherence to strict fitness benchmarks.

Moreover, it will create a strong pipeline for higher-level cricket, including the potential to progress to the Indian team or the IPL.

MCA President Ajinkya Naik welcomed the development, stating, “This initiative marks a new era for teh MCA. We are proud to be the first association to implement a player contract system, a progressive step that will provide greater security, structure, and growth opportunities for our Mumbai players.

It reflects our vision to strengthen the foundation of MCA and empower the next generation of cricketers,” Naik said during the MCA press release.

How Domestic Players Receive Money in 2026?

Domestic cricketers in India have traditionally earned through a combination of payments from the BCCI and their respective state associations. The BCCI pays match fees based on a daily rate, which was revised for the 2024-25 season and remains in place.

Senior men’s players can earn between ₹40,000 to ₹60,000 per day of cricket, depending on the format and level of the tournament.

Some state associations, including the MCA in the past, have supplemented these fees to effectively double a player’s earnings for domestic matches. Players are also entitled to a small percentage of the BCCI’s gross revenue from media rights, distributed among domestic cricketers.

Earlier Payment Issues And The Solution For Players

However, payments have sometimes faced delays in the past, particularly between 2016 and 2018, when many players complained about late dues from state associations. The BCCI now generally clears payments once state associations submit the necessary invoices and documentation.

The new MCA central contracts add a reliable annual retainer to these existing earnings. This fixed income provides a safety net between matches and tournaments, offering monetary stability.

Combined with BCCI match fees, daily allowances, and performance incentives, the contracts significantly enhance the overall compensation package for Mumbai’s domestic players.
