In search of some form in IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians take on the Punjab Kings in Match 23 of the season at the Wankhede Stadium, in what is expected to be a cracking contest. The visitors have come into the game unbeaten this season, while the only match won by MI was at the same venue in their season opener.
In the midst of a chaotic start to the season, there have been questions over some underwhelming returns from Hardik Pandya, both as a captain and as a batter. Despite winning their season opener for the first time in 14 years, they haven’t built on it and have consistently disappointed across departments.
Adding to the performances, captain Pandya found himself in yet another embarrassing situation as he seemed to have completely misread the situation as he took to the toss and made a blunder upon losing the toss.
Hardik Pandya commits blunder at the toss vs PBKS
As the coin toss took place in front of a packed Wankhede crowd, the visiting PBKS won the toss and elected to field first, expecting it to be a good evening to chase the score. Notably, as Hardik Pandya went up to speak to Ravi Shastri after Shreyas Iyer, he seemed a bit confused with what the surface had to offer.
While speaking to Shastri, he revealed MI’s intentions to field first against a high-flying Punjab, but also went on to say that it was a good toss to lose, implying they got what they wanted to do and left everyone confused.
“We [MI] were looking to bowl first as well. A good toss to lose,” he told Shastri.

Focus on Hardik Pandya as Rohit Sharma misses the PBKS clash
Leading up to the IPL 2026 match at Wankhede, the two teams have previously met 34 times in the IPL, with both winning 17 matches each — one of the PBKS wins also being decided in a double super over.
Considering how good PBKS have been since IPL 2025, a low on confidence MI setup needs to have some leaders taking onus upon themselves to bounce back from a dull start to the season. However, following Rohit Sharma’s hamstring injury in the previous match, he is out for at least a couple of matches, as revealed by Pandya at the toss.
Additionally, the New Zealand captain, Mitchell Santner, is not playing the match due to illness. Hence, with two senior figures out of the side, the focus will be on Pandya to step up and perform to turn around MI’s season. He will also need the likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma to return to form and contribute with high-impact knocks.

Hardik Pandya’s underwhelming IPL 2026
After winning the T20 World Cup 2026, where Hardik Pandya was among the key figures of the Indian team, MI fans expected a big season from their leader after a run to the playoffs in IPL 2025. However, things haven’t gone as they would have liked so far.
Having played four matches so far, Pandya has only scored 67 runs, failing to chase twice against RR and RCB, respectively. With the ball, he has only picked 2 wickets in 3 innings at an economy rate of 10.55.
For MI to replicate their IPL success from the yesteryears, Pandya’s form across departments will be of utmost importance as the IPL 2026 approaches the middle phase.
