The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a major step regarding centrally contracted players. This decision came after recent social media activity involving fast bowler Naseem Shah. The incident created a lot of discussion, and therefore the board decided to act strictly.
The incident happened during the opening ceremony of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2026) at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz attended the ceremony as the chief guest. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi welcomed her and introduced her to franchise owners and players.
Naseem Shah tweets on Maryam Nawaz
Shortly after this moment, a post appeared on Naseem Shah’s official X account. The post quoted a PCB media post showing Mohsin Naqvi greeting Maryam Nawaz and questioned why she was being treated like royalty.
The post quickly went viral and sparked debate on social media. However, the post was deleted within minutes.
Naseem Shah issues explanation
Soon after deleting the post, Naseem Shah shared another message saying that his account had been hacked and later recovered. He claimed that the controversial post was not written by him and was the result of a security breach.
Despite this explanation, the incident had already gained attention across social media and cricket circles. As a result, the PCB decided to investigate the matter further.

PCB takes disciplinary action against Naseem Shah
After reviewing the case, the Pakistan Cricket Board's disciplinary committee found Naseem guilty of violating clauses of his central contract and breaking social media guidelines. He was issued a show-cause notice on March 27.
Later, the board imposed a heavy fine of 20 million Pakistani rupees, which is approximately 72,000 US dollars or around 67 lakh Indian rupees.
Even though Naseem issued an unconditional apology and also removed his social media advisor, the board still imposed the fine. The advisor was also blacklisted and will not be allowed to work with any national player in the future.
PCB issues big warning for all Pakistan players
After this incident, the Pakistan Board issued a strong warning to all centrally contracted players. According to new instructions, players will not be allowed to post anything on social media without prior approval from the Pakistan cricket media department, as per Geo News.
In addition, players and their managers have been reminded to follow all social media guidelines mentioned in their contracts.
It is important to note that The board also clearly stated that political posts will not be tolerated under any situation. Furthermore, any player posting controversial content may face a fine of at least 10 million Pakistani rupees.
This fine on Naseem is believed to be the biggest fine in Pakistan cricket history. The Board has been taking strict action against players regarding political or controversial statements.
Last year, all-rounder Aamir Jamal was also fined for showing support for a political slogan. This shows that the board is serious about keeping players away from political matters and controversies.
Meanwhile, it is also important to note that Naseem Shah was the most expensive player in the PSL 2026 auction, where Rawalpindi bought him for a huge amount.
