KL Rahul notched up a slew of IPL records through his top-order cameo against the KKR. Shreyas Iyer is on track to lead Team India in ODIs and T20Is going ahead. In other news, Mohammed Shami is in race to make his return to the national side.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, May 8.

KL Rahul scored just 23 off 14 balls against the KKR in match number 51 of the IPL 2026 season. Despite his rare failure with the bat, the Delhi Capitals opener completed 1,000 runs for the franchise, thus becoming the first cricketer in IPL history to scale the landmark figure for three different teams.

Najmul Hossain Shanto scripts historic Test century for Bangladesh

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto composed 101 runs off 130 balls against Pakistan on Day 1 of the series-opening first Test in Mirpur. The prolific middle-order batter clattered 12 boundaries and two sixes as Bangladesh reached 301-4 by stumps.

While the innings marked the ninth Test century for Shanto, it also made him the first Bangladesh skipper in the history of the format to score a hundred against Pakistan.

ICC unveil Player of the Month nominees

The ICC has unveiled the nominations for the ICC Player of the Month award for the month of April 2026 under both, men and women categories. Bangladesh fast bowler Nahid Rana was the only cricketer from a Test-playing nation to make it to the men’s list, doing so for his New Zealand series heroics.

Oman right-handed batter Jatinder Singh and UAE fast bowler Ajay Kumar are the other two players who earned the nominations. In the women’s category, South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt made it to the list alongside Imesha Dulani and Laura Cardoso.

Shreyas Iyer likely to become ODI, T20I captain for India

Shreyas Iyer will reportedly replace Shubman Gill to become India’s next ODI captain. As reported by NDTV, the Punjab Kings skipper is also on track to become India’s T20I leader. The report also indicated that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel is looking at one captain for both ODI and T20I teams.

If Iyer becomes ODI captain, he might well lead Team India at the 2027 ICC World Cup.

Mohammed Shami likely to make India return

Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is on track to make his national return. The speedster is currently in race with young seamers after the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season. As reported by Cricblogger, Shami may join forces with Mohammed Siraj for India’s one-off Test match against Afghanistan in June next month.

Shami last played for Team India back during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
