LPL 2026 is set to take center stage later this year, running from July 10 to August 5, culminating in the championship game. Fans are eagerly anticipating thrilling T20 action and star-studded line-ups.

Unlike the IPL and PSL, which rely on player auctions, LPL will use a player draft system. Teams are preparing their squads, and the foreign player registration portal opened on May 4, 2026, as announced two weeks ago.

Excitement is building further with the announcement of bizarre qualification rules for player categories, which factor in not only cricketing performance but also social media following, commercial appeal, and fan engagement, adding a unique twist to squad selection.

LPL 2026 Sets 250k Social Media Followers' Requirement for Icon Players

The sixth edition of the LPL has introduced strict new rules for player categories. Top-tier Icon players must meet not only cricketing standards but also commercial and social media criteria, signaling a major shift in selection priorities.

Detailed Criteria for Icon Players:

  • Must have played at least 75 T20 internationals.
  • Featured in over 100 franchise T20 matches.
  • Played a minimum of 30 matches in the past 18 months.
  • Must have a social media following exceeding 250,000 followers.

Many fans and experts consider this rule unusual, as player selection in professional cricket has traditionally been based purely on skill and recent form. Now, online popularity directly impacts eligibility, making cricket performance secondary for Icon status.

With Sri Lanka Cricket under government control, LPL organizers aim to boost visibility, sponsorship, and fan engagement. Prioritizing social media reach, they expect Icon players to attract followers, increase revenue, and blend cricketing skill with marketability.

Overseas Rules, and Salaries Explained for LPL 2026

Retired Sri Lanka cricketers cannot participate in LPL 2026. Moreover, all overseas players must have represented their national teams or played in top-level T20 leagues like ILT20, Major League Cricket, or Full Member Board tournaments within the past 12 months.

If we look at the pay structure, Icon and Star players will earn USD 60,000–80,000, Platinum players are set at USD 50,000, Gold players at USD 30,000, and Classic players at USD 20,000. Salaries reflect both cricketing experience and marketability, including social media presence and fan appeal.
