Jos Buttler Predicts Only Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Can Break His World Record

Jos Buttler recently became the leading run-scorer in men's T20 cricket, adding a massive milestone to his white-ball career. Buttler surpassed Kieron Pollard's tally during the Manchester Super Giants' clash against Welsh Fire in The Hundred 2026. 

However, while speaking about his massive record, Buttler threw down a nifty, yet partially true remark about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the Indian rising star.

Buttler, who has been playing since 2009, has amassed 14,833 runs from 522 matches while averaging 35.48. Topping Pollard by just 30 runs, Buttler, who has recently rediscovered his T20 batting form, shared his thoughts after becoming the leading T20 run-scorer in the world.

The English legend recalled his roller-coaster ride as a batter in the last few months. Buttler had a torrid T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, managing just 87 runs in eight innings. However, the talismanic batter regained his mojo in the IPL 2026, and followed it up with some breathtaking batting performances in the English summer. 

“Funny how quickly cricket can change. One day you're the dog, one day you're the lamp post. A few months ago I was struggling for form. And then, in the last few weeks especially, I probably feel like I'm batting as well as I ever have. I've had energy and determination to try and get back there, and that's what I've done,” Buttler shared on SkyCricket.

Buttler, while expressing his pride in moving ahead of legendary names like Chris Gayle and David Warner on the list, also spoke about the possibility of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi breaking this record one day.

“Yeah it's really cool actually to think you've got the most T20 runs out of everyone. Someone will surpass it one day, and his name's probably Sooryavanshi. But no, it's a proud moment,” Jos Buttler said.

To be able to sustain a cricketing career after 2026 will require techniques along with hitting ability, both of which Sooryavanshi possesses. Even India great Sachin Tendulkar believes that Sooryavanshi have got many playing years in him because of his sound awareness of the game.

"To be able to play in all directions of the ground, you need good wrist work. And he is not slogging the ball. He is just picking the line and length earlier than the rest of the guys, and he is able to clear the rope comfortably," Tendulkar shared during the Cricinfo Honours in Mumbai in May 2026.

Can Vaibhav Sooryavanshi become highest run-getter in T20s?

Realistically, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can actually break Jos Buttler's record for the most runs in T20 cricket. Currently, Sooryavanshi already has 1,670 runs from just 40 T20 matches, while boasting a strike rate of 216.32. 

The pace at which Vaibhav Sooryavanshi scores is phenomenal, and he's unlikely to be stopped unless he himself decides to. With him being just 15 years of age, even if he does not represent India for most of his international games, his domestic tallies, along with his Indian Premier League runs, will help him push towards this T20 record.

Sooryavanshi has played only 40 T20 matches so far, but he is already the highest T20 run-scorer among players who have played a maximum of 40 matches. His tally of 1,670 runs tops the chart, ahead of players like R.S. Kunnummal of Kerala, who scored 1,262 runs from his first 40 matches while averaging 36.05.

With almost 20 years of cricket still left in him, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could very well break Jos Buttler's record and become the highest T20 run-scorer in the world.
