Jos Buttler registered yet another failure in ODIs, this time against Team India in the first match of the series at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Batting at number five for England, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter struck just five off 14 balls before mistiming one off Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna.

Buttler’s failure has now further extended his lean patch with the bat in 50-overs international, considering the 35-year-old is yet to notch up a single half-century in the format in seven successive innings. Despite his recent failure, the seasoned pro managed to enter an exclusive English club in international cricket.

Buttler has now become only the second England player in history to feature in 200 or more ODI matches. Previously, his ex-teammate and 2019 World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan was the only player to play over 200 games for the national side.

It is worth noting that Morgan played 225 ODIs for England, and another 23 for the Ireland cricket team. Both Morgan and Buttler also played key roles for England in their historic 2019 World Cup triumph at home.

Here is a detailed look at England players with over 200 ODI caps to their names.

A look at Jos Buttler’s illustrious ODI journey

Jos Buttler made his ODI debut for England back in February 2012 during a series against Pakistan in the UAE. While the cricketer started off his ODI journey with a two-ball duck, the star wicketkeeper-batter went on to become one of the most prolific run-makers in England history.

By the time of completing 200 ODIs, Buttler currently finds himself as England’s third most successful batter in the format behind former captains Joe Root and Eoin Morgan.

However, the hard-hitting wicketkeeper-batter holds an astonishing strike rate of 114.97, which is one of the highest in the world among all players with over 5,000 runs in the format. He has scored 5,520 runs in 172 innings in his career at an average of 38.87, plundering 11 tons and 29 fifties in the process.

England recovers to mount over 250

In spite of Buttler’s early failure, England motored past the 250-run mark in the first ODI of its three-match series against India in Birmingham. Winning the toss and opting to bat first, the hosts slipped to 107-6 at one stage before Joe Root and Liam Dawson shared a counterattacking 121-run partnership.

Both Root and Dawson punched out sizzling half-centuries in the process to conjure a formidable total against India’s famed batting line-up.
