In a remarkable step, the ICC has decided to send a high-level team to Sri Lanka in order to resolve the crisis in cricket administration in the Island Nation.

If reports are to be believed, a senior BCCI official has teamed up with the ICC's deputy chairman, as the Jay Shah-led apex body aims to bring stability in Sri Lankan cricket administration.

Led by Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan cricket team recently suffered an embarrassing Super 8 exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. Despite playing on home soil, the co-hosts registered three consecutive defeats in the Super 8, failing to qualify for the semifinal.

Sri Lanka government's intervention led to resignation of SLC president

After Sri Lanka crashed out of the T20 World Cup, the team led by Dasun Shanaka received massive backlash from the fans.

While head coach Sanath Jayasuriya stepped down from his role, the Lankan government launched a probe to determine the underlying reasons behind the national team's premature ouster from the competition.

According to several reports, Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake had an intense discussion with Shammi Silva, who served as the SLC president during the T20 World Cup.

Silva took a drastic step following his meet-up with Dissanayake, resigning from his position. This paved the way for the Sri Lankan government to create an interim committee, which was eventually formed by the country's sports minister Sunil Kumara Gamage.

Gamage appointed an interim panel comprising nine members, including former captains Kumar Sangakkara, Sidath Wettimuny and Roshan Mahanama.

The sports minister also appointed opposition politician Eran Wickremaratna as the leader of the panel, which was named the Cricket Transformation Committee.

The nine-member committee has been tasked to postulate structural reforms that could ensure fairness in governance and bring stability in cricket administration in Sri Lanka at the grass-roots level.

ICC sends high-level team; BCCI official pairs up with Pakistan administrator

After Sri Lanka's sports minister laid the foundation of the nine-member Cricket Transformation Committee, the Jay Shah-led ICC decided to send a high-level team, pairing up one of the BCCI's senior officials with its deputy chairman.

Imran Khawaja, a Pakistan-origin administrator, will work in collaboration with the BCCI official, as the Jay Shah-led apex body aims to restore stability in Sri Lanka Cricket.

According to India Today, Pakistan's ICC official, Imran Khawaja, landed in the Island Nation on Friday, while his partner from the BCCI will arrive in the country on Saturday, May 16.

The visit of the ICC delegation, which comprises renowned administrators from India and Pakistan, holds significant importance, given that the Sri Lankan sports minister recently claimed that the government hadn't consulted with the apex body regarding the appointment of the Cricket Transformation Committee.

What is ICC's stance regarding government interference in cricketing affairs

The Jay Shah-led ICC formally discourages the involvement of the government in cricketing affairs. However, Sri Lanka's existing sports law, enacted in 1973, allows the government to dissolve the existing administrative committee and form interim panels.

Several reports further claim that the Lankan government has assured the ICC that new members of the SLC will be appointed through elections, to be held in due course.
