The International Cricket Council has suspended all financial distributions to Cricket Canada for the next six months following serious governance-related concerns.
The global governing body informed Cricket Canada of the decision earlier this week, delivering a significant financial blow to a board that is already in a massive controversy.
While the ICC has confirmed the funding freeze will not directly impact cricket activities or high-performance programmes, the financial strain on an Associate Member that depends heavily on ICC money could have far-reaching consequences for the sport's growth in Canada.
Cricket Canada Joins A Troubling List
Cricket Canada is far from the first cricket board to find itself on the wrong side of an ICC funding or membership decision. The pattern of suspensions in recent years paints a concerning picture of governance failures spreading across Associate and Full Member boards alike.
USA Cricket had its membership suspended in September 2025 after repeated breaches of constitutional obligations, persistent governance failures and a lack of meaningful progress with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
Sri Lanka Cricket was suspended entirely by the ICC in late 2023 following severe government and political interference in the board's day-to-day administration, a suspension that immediately halted all funding.
Zimbabwe Cricket has similarly faced ICC sanctions over government interference in the past, reflecting how political meddling continues to threaten the sport's integrity in several nations.

How Much Does Cricket Canada Rely On ICC Money?
The scale of Cricket Canada's financial dependence on the ICC makes this suspension particularly damaging.
According to the board's financial statement for the year ending 2024, income received from the ICC accounted for a staggering 63% of Cricket Canada's total revenue, CAD $3.6 million out of a total income of CAD $5.7 million.
For an Associate Member without the commercial infrastructure of a Full Member board, losing access to that funding stream for six months is not a minor inconvenience.
What Went Wrong For Canada Cricket?
The specific details behind the ICC's decision have not been officially disclosed, though Canada's investigative documentary programme, the fifth estate, has reported that the issues involve breaches of ICC policies, poor governance practices and a lack of financial oversight within the board.
One of the most alarming episodes involved former CEO Salman Khan, whose appointment drew immediate ICC attention after it emerged he had failed to disclose prior criminal charges.
He has since been charged with theft and fraud by Calgary Police, charges he has denied. His removal from the role was among the more visible signs of the dysfunction that had taken hold within the organisation.
Further controversy arrived through a leaked audio recording of a phone call involving then-coach Khurram Chohan.
In the recording, Chohan claimed that senior Cricket Canada board members pressured him into selecting certain players for the national team. The audio also contained allegations of match-fixing attempts, prompting the ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit to launch a separate investigation.
Adding to the mess, Canada's match against New Zealand at the recent T20 World Cup is itself under investigation by the ICC's anti-corruption and integrity unit, further darkening the cloud hanging over Canadian cricket.
Annual Meeting Reforms Come Too Late
The ICC's funding suspension was announced immediately after Cricket Canada held its annual general meeting on May 9 and 10, during which the board unveiled a series of reforms described as part of its "ongoing governance transformation initiative."
A new nine-person board of directors was elected at the meeting, with Arvinder Khosa, who had been serving as interim board president since April, replacing Amjad Bajwa, confirmed as president.
The timing of the ICC's decision, arriving so swiftly after that meeting, suggests the global body was not sufficiently convinced by the reforms announced.
