In a heartwarming moment, Jacob Bethell rescued an injured bird after it was hit by Shreyas Iyer during the second ODI between India and England. The video of the whole moment went viral on social media as fans praised Bethell for his humanity.

India batted first in the 2nd game held at Cardiff and crossed the 100-run mark comfortably. However, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan fell in quick succession, which derailed India’s innings.

Regardless, Virat Kohli stood his ground to hit a half-century while Shreyas Iyer also scored 66 off 71 balls.

Shreyas Iyer’s brute force injures a bird

Meanwhile, in the 33rd over of the first innings, Saqib Mahmood bowled a length delivery outside off stump to Shreyas Iyer. The batter played a firm drive on the rise.

The shot was heading through the cover region, where a seagull was standing on the field. Unfortunately, the ball struck the seagull, stopping its momentum and preventing it from reaching the boundary.

Since the ball lost pace after hitting the bird, the batters could only complete one run. But England fielder Jacob Bethell showed some humanity as he ran over, gently picked up the injured seagull, and handed it to a steward standing near the boundary rope so it could receive care.

It's important to note that, in cricket, if the ball accidentally hits an animal on the field, play continues unless the umpires decide to stop it. There is no special rule awarding extra runs because the ball hit the bird.

The batting side simply gets whatever runs they are able to complete before the fielding team returns the ball.

Iyer showed good touch after a poor T20I series

Having said that, Shreyas Iyer redeemed himself in the second ODI against England. Coming off a T20I series loss as captain, Iyer scored a remarkable half-century to ensure India finished with a respectable total.

His form as a batter was under scrutiny since he had performed poorly in the T20I series as well. Hence, the 66-run knock couldn’t have come at a better time for Iyer.

Interestingly, he was also demoted to no. 5 for this game as the management promoted Ishan Kishan to no. 4 for the left-right combination. Still, Shreyas Iyer stayed unfazed and scored a fifty to keep India’s hopes high.

India on top after quick wickets

Meanwhile, India had a terrific start in the second innings as Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Ben Duckett on the very first ball. Prasidh Krishan also bowled ruthlessly from the other end as he got rid of Jacob Bethell on 4 off 10 balls.

England were 2 wickets down with just 8 runs on the board as they still had over 200 runs to chase. India have set a target of 234 runs as Harry Brook and Joe Root are battling out at the crease to revive the innings.

It’s important to note that India are leading the 3-game series 1-0 after they won the first ODI comfortably by 6 wickets. A win here would help the men in blue register a series victory.
