Rohit Sharma has been a great servant of Indian cricket since 2007, but every good journey comes to an end, and for Rohit, the curtains on his illustrious ODI career are set to fall after the ongoing series against England.

For months now, there have been talks regarding Rohit’s future with the Indian ODI side, and it seems the selectors have finally made up their mind, as Rohit Sharma is not in India’s scheme of things for the 2027 World Cup, and the veteran batter could retire from ODIs.

Rohit Sharma to be sacked from ODIs, retirement on the cards?

According to the latest report by Indian Express, Rohit Sharma won’t be a part of India’s 2027 World Cup squad and the decision has been conveyed to the legendary Indian opener.

The third and the final ODI between India and England at Lord’s could be his last game in the format, the report said. The Gautam Gambhir-led management has laid down their plans for the future, and Rohit doesn’t fit in the system as India wants to try new openers alongside Shubman Gill.

Moreover, Rohit's twin failures in the two ODIs against England haven't helped his cause, as the selectors have found a reason to drop him permanently, and that could prompt Rohit to take ODI retirement.

Rohit Sharma unhappy with sacking decision

The dynamic opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal is waiting in the wings, and reportedly, the selectors want to give him a longer rope before the 2027 World Cup.

“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” a source told Indian Express.

Rohit spoke to the BCCI officials before the start of the India vs England ODI series as he wanted to continue playing in the ODIs, but the decision left him angry as he wasn’t pleased with how things panned out between him and the BCCI.

Why the BCCI decided to remove Rohit Sharma from ODIs?

There are several reasons why the BCCI has decided to move on from Rohit Sharma before the 2027 World Cup. Firstly, by the time the World Cup arrives, Rohit will be 41, and over the last few months, the former Indian captain has faced fitness and injury issues that have hampered his journey.

At 41, he won’t be getting any younger, and the selectors have rightly raised questions regarding his fitness. Moreover, his ODI record in 2026 is average to say the least.

In eight innings, he has amassed just 241 runs, with an average of just 30, and a strike rate of 88.6. He was outstanding with the bat in 2025, but this year, things have gone downhill as Rohit Sharma could be forced to take ODI retirement.

Rohit Sharma's ODI record at a glance

Rohit Sharma has been an ODI legend, having delivered the goods for India. He had an ordinary ODI journey till 2013, but ever since MS Dhoni promoted him as an opener, Rohit’s career skyrocketed.

The right-handed Mumbaikar has played in 286 ODI matches and has racked up 11731 runs, with an outstanding average of 48.67. Rohit will finish his ODI career with 33 centuries, the third most in the history of the game.

He was also the captain of the ODI setup that reached the final of the 2023 World Cup as under his leadership, Team India played an attacking brand of cricket.
