As India took on England in the second ODI at Cardiff, former captain Rohit Sharma had a soft dismissal while batting on 26 off 47 balls. His slow and poor knock had the fans questioning his place in the ODI team.

With a 1-0 lead in the series, India batted first in the second ODI after England opted to bowl first. Rohit and Shubman Gill opened the innings, but the skipper was dismissed on 31 off 30 balls by Gus Atkinson.

Rohit Sharma was dismissed after a long struggle

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma was having a tough time in the middle. He was struggling to connect, settled for singles and even gave away a maiden over to Sam Curran.

Batting at 26 with a strike rate of just 55.32, Rohit faced Will Jacks. A flighted ball is tossed up to tempt the batter into playing an attacking shot.

Rohit, already under pressure with eight consecutive dot balls, was looking to break the pressure by attacking. He attempted a sweep shot but failed to middle it.

It came off the toe-end of the bat, and instead of travelling along the ground, it ballooned into the air. England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler moved slightly to his left and completed a comfortable catch.

Fans lashed out at Rohit Sharma

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma walked back to the pavilion with his head hanging down in disappointment. But fans on the internet were equally upset. Many slammed the ex-captain for the poor strike rate.

A lot of fans also questioned Rohit’s place in the ODI squad, suggesting that he shouldn’t play in the 2027 ODI World Cup as his approach is too slow and he is in his late 30s.

Also, a few fans vouched for Yashasvi Jaiswal, arguing that Rohit Sharma was eating up a deserving youngster’s place. Social media was quickly filled with hate comments, and the dismissal of Sharma became viral on the internet.

"Rohit Sharma gets out by playing 10 dot balls on trott, a very poor knock came to end. If Rohit Sharma is really selfless then he would let Yashasvi Jaiswal play in ODIs who has 2 100s in last 3 games. Its time to hang your boots Rohit, you can't play ODI WC at age of 41 in South Africa!"@Rajiv1841

"I never saw Rohit was struggling this much before, played a full over dotball against Sam curran 😭🥹. Thank you Rohit Sharma 💙" @itz_VJ_Srt_RO45

India three down after crossing the 100-run mark

Meanwhile, back on the field, India lost yet another wicket after Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan, who was promoted up the order at no. 4, holed out to Sam Curran in a caught-and-bowled dismissal.

Ishan missed the timing while taking on Curran, and the ball travelled back to the bowler, who didn’t make any mistake in sending Kishan back to the hut on 1 off 8 balls.

With that, India had lost three wickets with 111 runs on the board. Shreyas Iyer was later sent to bat at no. 5 as the righty-lefty combination strategy backfired. Interestingly, Virat Kohli is still batting in the middle and approaching a half-century.
