Whether the IPL season is going on or not, the tournament is always in the limelight, and this time it is because of IPL head coaches - Australia's Ricky Ponting and India's Ashish Nehra.

Along with players playing in the IPL, team coaches have also become a major talking point, especially because of the huge salaries involved.

In the recent reports, the annual earnings of several prominent coaches, including Punjab Kings’ Ponting, Gujarat Titans’ Ashish Nehra, former CSK coach Stephen Fleming and RCB’s Andy Flower, have been revealed.

How Much Ricky Ponting And Ashish Nehra Earn From IPL?

It is vital to note that former Australian player Ricky Ponting, as PBKS’ head coach, earns around Rs 9.5 crore per year. On the other hand, as a player, his annual income from cricket was around Rs 1.2 crore (as per CricBlogger). His reported salary places him among the highest-paid coaches in IPL history.

Along with Ponting, Ashish Nehra from Gujarat Titans is another coach who earns a fat salary. The former India left-arm seamer reportedly earns almost as much as Ponting.

Although, he initially joined the franchise on a modest deal, his contract was later revised after Gujarat Titans’ IPL title win in 2022.

New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming has also been among the better-paid coaches in IPL. During his time with Chennai Super Kings, he reportedly earned around Rs 7.5 crore annually.

Which Other IPL Coaches Are Among The Highest Paid?

Earlier, there were reports that Yuvraj Singh might join Delhi Capitals as batting coach, and if those reports are to be believed, he will also enter the high-paying coaching bracket.

As per the same Cricblogger report, Yuvraj could earn more than Rs 6 crore every year.

Zaheer Khan also earned well during his coaching stint with Lucknow Super Giants, with his reported annual earnings standing at around Rs 5 crore. Rahul Dravid was reportedly paid around Rs 4.5 crore with Rajasthan Royals. RCB’s Andy Flower and Justin Langer also earned around Rs 4 crore for their IPL assignments.

What makes IPL coaching a better financial decision than international coaching?

IPL coaching often receives more attention than national team coaching because of the league's highly visible nature. For nearly two months, coaches are involved in matches, team selections, and decisions almost every day.

Apart from it, nowadays, IPL coaching has become a full time role as well. With Indian franchises taking up ownership in multiple T20 leagues across the Globe, the coaching staff formed for IPL gets retained across T20 leagues too. The commercial scale of the IPL also adds to the attention, along with the financial difference.

“That’s why former cricketers are increasingly being drawn towards the IPL. The money this league generates is simply unmatched,” another source said.

When the IPL started, foreign coaches were reportedly earning around Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 2 crore. Today, leading coaches can command several times those amounts. So all these factors make IPL coaching more important than national team coaching.
