In a massive development, Big Bash League dominators Sydney Sixers have roped in Australia's white-ball all-rounder and current Punjab Kings bowling coach James Hopes as their new coach for the franchise.

Notably, this will be Hopes' first stint as a head coach. While having a massive, reputed build of his long-grown experience. He has been a bowling coach in the IPL, BBL, and Major League Cricket and has also worked with Queensland and Tasmania in Australia's domestic system.

This impressive resume further marks him as one of the favourites to be chosen for the Sydney Sixers coaching role.

PBKS Coach Cracks 2-Year Deal, Replaces Greg Shipperd

The 47-year-old replaces former coach Greg Shipperd with a two-year deal. For the unaware, Shipperd was sacked halfway through his contract despite leading the Sixers to the BBL final in January.

Hopes' stint will be one of his first with the Sydney Sixers, as he expressed his excitement about stepping into a new administrative role.

He has played 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is for Australia and has also captained Queensland to a Shield victory alongside one-day titles.

Hopes Excited For New BBL Role

His 16-year first-class career helped him garner massive accolades as he now joins the Sydney Sixers in the hope of building a new legacy for the three-time BBL winners.

"I'm incredibly honoured to join the Sydney Sixers, a club with a proud history and a strong identity built on consistency, competitiveness and connection with its fans. I'm excited to work with a talented playing group and contribute to the next phase of the Sixers' success in the BBL," Hopes said.

The general manager of Sydney Sixers, Rachael Haynes, was also excited to bring in the Punjab Kings coach because of his coaching experience in T20 franchise cricket.

He was expressive of how Hopes is also one of the most valuable acquisitions for the franchise in recent times.

"James is an exceptional cricket mind with a proven track record of developing players and building high‑performing environments. His depth of experience across Australian domestic cricket and international franchise competitions makes him an outstanding fit for the Sixers. We're pleased to welcome him into the club as we enter an exciting new chapter," Haynes said.

Sydney Sixers Lose Final After Dominant BBL 2025-26 Campaign

Meanwhile, the Sydney Sixers lost the final against Perth Scorchers in the 2025-26 season despite having a strong run throughout the group stage with only four losses to their name.

The Sydney Sixers were favourites to win the title; however, the Scorchers clinched victory by six wickets, courtesy of David Payne's three-wicket haul and Mitchell Marsh and Finn Allen's rampage as Perth openers.

Punjab Kings Bowling Department Lacking

Significantly, PBKS' bowling department hasn't been very impressive. The highest wicket-taker for the camp in IPL 2026 is Arshdeep Singh, who has managed to take only 10 wickets from his nine matches. He was also very expensive with an economy rate of 10.38.

Vijaykumar Vyshak and Yuzvendra Chahal haven't been impressive either, with the duo taking 8 and 7 wickets, respectively, in their campaigns.

Overall, the Punjab Kings' bowling department has been lacking on many fronts. Whether James Hopes' Sydney Sixers will achieve significant success or not is something only time will tell as the new season begins in December 2026.
