England impose stricter guidelines [Source: AFP]
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is set to impose stricter guidelines on the England cricket team in the wake of last month’s nightclub incident involving Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson. The board had also cracked the whip with a midnight curfew earlier this year, doing so ahead of England’s tour of Sri Lanka and India.
As per a report, England players will not be allowed to drink alcohol even a day after a Test match. Moreover, players will also have to inform the team management if they want to go out of the team hotel after 10 pm.
ECB to impose stricter guidelines than January’s midnight curfew
The ECB will be imposing stricter guidelines on England cricket players to keep their ‘alcohol-related troubles’ in check.
As reported by journalist Will Macpherson, new restrictions indicate that England players will not be allowed to drink alcohol even a day after the Test match, let alone during match days or evenings. Moreover, the midnight curfew will continue to remain in effect after it was imposed earlier this year.

The decision to continue the curfew may have taken after it was breached by then England captain Ben Stokes and fellow all-rounder Gus Atkinson in London last month.
Furthermore, players will not be allowed to appear in public under the influence of alcohol, or even post anything about alcohol or related materials on social media. England cricketers will also need to inform the team management and security about going out of the team hotel after 10 pm.
When ECB imposed midnight curfew…
Back in January this year, the ECB informed England’s white-ball captain Harry Brook and head coach Brendon McCullum about imposing stringent night-time restrictions. The decision was made shortly before England’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka and the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India.
The midnight curfew was imposed following several off-field incidents involving England players.
For starters, Harry Brook was punched by a bouncer in New Zealand outside a nightclub last year. The cricketer was subsequently fined £30,000 by the ECB
Opening batter Ben Duckett was also reportedly found drunk and almost unconscious during a verbal altercation with civilians. The incident occurred around the halfway stage of England’s high-profile Ashes tour of Australia.
Ben Stokes announces retirement after nightclub drama
After England crushed New Zealand by 115 runs at Lord’s last month, captain Ben Stokes and fellow all-rounder Gus Atkinson were involved in a controversial nightclub incident in the city with a rugby player.
While the two cricketers were given clean chit by the ECB, the aftermath and scrutiny of the incident drew widespread public outrage, with many questioning England’s nighttime adventures and recent alcohol-related incidents.
Many fans and experts even believe that the impact of the nightclub incident may have played a big part in Ben Stokes confirming his retirement from international cricket following the end of the Test series against New Zealand.
Regardless, with these stricter measures, the ECB hopes to minimize off-field distractions, uphold the team’s public image and ensure players maintain the highest standards of professionalism.
