The ECB officially unveiled England Women’s squad for the upcoming 3-game ODI series against Ireland on Monday, August 17. Charlie Dean has been named captain for this home series, thus giving the all-rounder another chance to lead the side.
Ireland Women will tour England for a 3-game ODI series that will be held on September 1, 3 and 6. The first game will be played at Leicester, followed by one in Derby and Worcester.
Charlie Dean named captain for Ireland series
Having said that, England Women unveiled their squad for the Ireland series almost 2 weeks in advance. Charlie Dean will return as captain to lead the side.
She previously took charge of England’s ODI team against New Zealand when regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was unavailable because of injury. With Sciver-Brunt again absent for the Ireland series, Dean will take over the captaincy once more.
Ryana MacDonald-Gay has been recalled after recovering from the lower-back problem that kept her out last year. She has enjoyed a strong domestic season and will now have an opportunity to return to England's ODI setup.
Also, with Amy Jones not in the squad, Alice Capsey is expected to take the gloves. Two uncapped players, Kira Chathli and Grace Potts, have also been included. Meanwhile, Charis Pavely, who already has two T20I appearances, could make her ODI debut.

Senior England players rested
Interestingly, senior all-rounder and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is among several senior players who have been left out as England manage workloads and fitness.
Danni Wyatt is also working on her recovery, while Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones have not been selected.
The absence of several established players means the Ireland series will be an opportunity for England's younger and less experienced players to impress. It will help them test their bench strength before big tournaments.
Charlie Dean’s captaincy record
That being said, this Ireland series is a big opportunity for Charlie Dean to prove her leadership skills. She earlier led England in the ODI series against New Zealand, where the series was tied 1-1.
In the first ODI, Dean won the Player of the Match award as well for her all-round performance. Apart from international cricket, Dean has been captaining London Spirit in the Women’s Hundred tournament.
She made her captaincy debut in 2022 and later replaced injured Heather Knight as Spirit’s captain again in 2025. In 2026, she was appointed London Spirit’s permanent captain for the first time.
So overall, Charlie Dean has had decent exposure as captain, and the upcoming ODI series against Ireland Women would be a good test for her.
