BCCI Asked To Intervene In IPL Trades [Source: AFP]
Amid IPL trade speculations around all-rounder Hardik Pandya, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has called for greater transparency, urging the BCCI to intervene and disclose financial details of high-profile transfers to the public.
Pandya was the first player in IPL history to be traded when he moved from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians in 2024. Since then, IPL trades have become the new normal.
Recently, Sanju Samson was traded to CSK in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant was traded from LSG to Delhi Capitals in exchange for Kuldeep Yadav in what turned out to be significant high-profile trades.
Sunil Gavaskar opens up on IPL trades
Not only that, according to reports, all-rounder Hardik Pandya could be on the move again as he is reportedly seeking an exit from Mumbai Indians. Amid such intense speculations, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar took a strong stand against these trades.
In his latest column with Mid-day, Gavaskar said that when a player is traded between two IPL franchises, the BCCI, the two teams involved and the player know the financial details of the deal.
“There’s some speculation in the media about the possible switching of players from one franchise to another. There’s, of course, still some time for that window to be closed. However, while transfer of a player from one franchise to another is in the public domain, when a trade takes place, then the numbers are known only to the two franchises, the player and BCCI,” Gavaskar said.
However, the other eight franchises may not have access to those numbers. This creates a potential concern around the salary cap.

Gavaskar calls for IPL trade transparency
Every IPL franchise has limits on how much it can spend on its squad. If the financial details of a trade aren't publicly disclosed, other teams cannot independently determine whether the transaction was conducted within the competition's rules.
Sunil Gavaskar therefore believes that the numbers involved in trades should be made public.
“In such a situation, the other franchises don’t know if the salary cap that every franchise has for its squad was maintained or breached. That’s why it’s important for full transparency that the numbers are also out in the public domain,” he added.
Interestingly, Gavaskar didn’t accuse any franchise specifically, but his argument is that transparency can prevent suspicion in the first place.
Hardik Pandya trade chatter
Having said that, Hardik Pandya, after winning a title for GT in 2024, moved back to Mumbai Indians with high hopes. However, he wasn’t received well by the fans.
Moreover, MI’s performance since Hardik took over as captain has been nothing but shambolic. Not only that, rumours of dissent and rift in the dressing room dominated headlines in the last IPL season.
Hence, in such circumstances, Hardik Pandya is reportedly not keen on staying any longer with Mumbai Indians. He is apparently in talks with KKR, CSK and GT for a potential trade ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
Hardik’s sole demand is reportedly captaincy. He has been leading in the IPL since 2024 and has won titles as well. Hence, captaincy is something that will be a deal-breaker in his trade talks.
