Cameron Green has returned from a strong IPL 2026 season with the Kolkata Knight Riders, and his performances have placed him firmly in the frame for a new job in Australia’s Test team.
With Usman Khawaja retired, selectors are now looking at Green as a possible opening partner for Travis Head. Head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed the team is thinking about how to fit both Cameron Green and fellow all-rounder Beau Webster into the side, and the vacancy at the top of the order is part of that puzzle.
How Did Cameron Green’s IPL 2026 Go?
Green, from his 14 innings scored 322 runs at an average of 32.20 and an impressive strike rate of 145.70. His best knock was a rapid 79 off 55 balls against Gujarat Titans on 17 April, and he added another fifty against the same team on 16 May.
Across the tournament he also made handy scores like 34 off 21 against Lucknow, 33 off 27 against Delhi, and 32 off 24 against Bangalore.
With the ball he took 7 wickets in 10 innings, though his economy rate was on the higher side at 10.64. His best bowling figures were 2 for 23 against Mumbai Indians. The all-round contribution of Cameron Green reminded everyone of the complete package he offers.

Cameron Green, Now A Solid Australia All-Rounder
Even when runs didn’t come easily last summer, McDonald stressed that Green’s overall value is enormous, especially after the series of performances he showed with KKR.
“His impact with bat, ball and then in the field balances out our team. While at times he doesn’t perform at a level that the external expect, you’ve got to understand the sum of all parts and what he does in terms of balancing our team and making others better.
Sometimes we critique the individual’s performance, and we don’t look at the overall function of the team. So he’s incredibly important with that all-round skill set in white-ball [cricket],” McDonald said.
That three‑dimensional game is exactly why selectors want to keep him in the Test XI, even if it means rethinking where he bats.
How IPL 2026 Helped Reshape Green’s Australian Role?
The opening spot in Australia has been a trouble area since David Warner and Khawaja’s productive partnership ended. Several players have been tried there without lasting success. Now, Khawaja’s retirement has created an obvious gap.
“Usman retired, so there is a gap that presents at the top. We played an eight-batter team if you want to call it that, with Beau Webster doing the spin duties. So there’s opportunities within our team. Is [Cameron Green] the person? We've got a long time to understand what our team looks like, then hopefully we hit the ground running for those possible 21 Test matches.
The red-ball conversation happens further down the track. We’ve got Cam starting in early July in Brisbane, we’ll start to build that out. He didn’t have the summer he would’ve liked last year,” McDonald explained.
Cameron Green’s IPL form has added weight to the idea. The runs he scored at a high tempo for Kolkata showed that he can take on the new ball aggressively, a trait that could translate into a successful opening partnership with Travis Head.
The other option of moving Head to No.3 or back to No.5 remains on the table, but the selectors are seriously considering Green for the top.
Cameron Green Up For White-Ball Challenge Too
The IPL also sparked fresh thinking about his white‑ball positioning. With Glenn Maxwell absent from the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan, McDonald hinted Green could be tried in different spots.
“There is an element of, OK, where do we want to position people? Glenn Maxwell’s not in the team, do we need some power down in the finishing role? Is Cameron a four? … he has been up and down the order, so there’s more questions than answers at the moment, but we’ll try a few things,” he added.
The challenge for the coaching staff is to manage Green’s transition from the intense IPL environment to the Pakistan series and then into the long‑term red‑ball planning.
Hence, a productive IPL 2026 has not only refreshed Cameron Green’s confidence but also opened a clear path toward a new responsibility at the top of Australia’s Test batting order, one he would like to excel at from the very start.
