In a major development, reports have emerged that all-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to be sacked as Mumbai Indians captain after the team failed to make it to the playoffs in the IPL 2026 season.
MI didn’t start the season well and kept on hitting low after low. With just 4 wins in 14 games, they finished in ninth place on the points table.
This is the second time in the last three years that MI failed to make it to the playoffs under Pandya’s captaincy. Not only that, according to speculations, the MI dressing room atmosphere is reportedly hostile as players are not getting along with Hardik and his captaincy style.
Amid this, it is believed that Mumbai’s senior management is mulling tough calls before the next season, beginning with the sacking of Hardik Pandya. In such a case, here are three captaincy options MI can explore for the IPL 2027 season.

The best available long-term option for the Mumbai Indians is left-hand batter Tilak Varma. He joined the franchise in 2022 and has since been a permanent face in the setup.
Interestingly, MI camp values Varma significantly, and that trust showed when they retained him during the high-stakes IPL 2025 mega auction. Clearly, Tilak is a part of Mumbai’s long-term vision.
As for captaincy, Tilak Varma surely lacks experience. But with the bat, he has been exceptional, scoring 1858 runs at a strike rate of 144.70, including a hundred and 10 fifties.
Hence, if the Mumbai Indians want to go for a long-term solution and build a team around a youngster, Tilak Varma is their best bet.
2. Suryakumar Yadav

In case the Mumbai Indians value experience, Suryakumar Yadav becomes an automatic best choice. He is India’s T20I captain who led the team to the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 title victory.
Not only that, SKY has captained in 5 IPL games, winning 2 while losing 3. However, in international cricket, his captaincy record is much better.
Also, Suryakumar Yadav is well-versed with the franchise culture, as he has been associated with the Mumbai Indians since 2018. He is a well-respected individual in the MI dressing room and also a part of the senior group.
Another captaincy candidate for MI to replace Hardik Pandya is Jasprit Bumrah. He marked his IPL captaincy debut in IPL 2026 when he led the franchise in the absence of Pandya and SKY.
Previously, Bumrah has captained the Indian Test team as a stand-in skipper. The right-arm medium pacer is also a franchise legend, having been part of the setup since 2013.
Mumbai took him in when he was a teenager, looking for a platform, and saw him become India’s best modern-day pacer. Hence, out of all people, Jasprit Bumrah is someone who is worthy of the reward of captaincy.
However, the only roadblock for Bumrah is his fitness. The pacer is highly susceptible to back injury, which makes his workload management a high priority.
Hence, there could be instances in the future where Jasprit Bumrah may not be available for a full season, which will again cause instability. So, MI will have to be careful while evaluating Bumrah as a potential captaincy replacement for Hardik Pandya.
