How often does it happen that a captain helps a team win the world title, and he gets sacked before the next series commences? This is exactly what happened with Suryakumar Yadav after he won the T20 World Cup 2026 for India.

The middle-order Indian batter was going through a rough patch for both India and the Mumbai Indians, and with age not by his side, the BCCI selectors decided to sack him from leadership, with Shreyas Iyer getting appointed as the new leader.

However, in the latest development, it has been reported that the doors are not shut on his T20I future, and the former Indian skipper could still make his comeback.

Suryakumar Yadav still in BCCI's T20I plans

According to reports by Times Now Journalist, Karishma Singh, Suryakumar Yadav still has a chance to make his T20I comeback as the BCCI has not truly ruled him out of contention. However, there is one condition: The batter needs to perform heavily in the domestic circuit and also for his IPL team, the Mumbai Indians.

Reportedly, SKY could be given a second chance by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel if the player delivers the goods in domestic cricket and follows due diligence.

Several former players like Yuvraj Singh, Ambati Rayudu, and Dinesh Karthik have made a comeback after being away from the game, and SKY could follow the same path.

With the Indian side having a disastrous UK tour, the BCCI has perhaps once again opened the door for the former cricketer as he still brings valuable experience to the table.

Why Suryakumar Yadav was dropped by BCCI?

One of the best T20I batters in Indian history, Suryakumar Yadav’s form dipped since the start of 2025. While India was winning games under his leadership, SKY’s form kept getting worse as he failed to deliver the goods in big games.

In 2025, Suryakumar Yadav played 21 T20I matches and scored 218 runs, with a strike rate of 123.16. With age, his hand-eye coordination wasn’t the best, and it affected Suryakumar Yadav’s batting.

In 2026, the former India captain possessed strong T20I numbers, but his IPL form dipped as he could only score 270 runs in 13 matches, with a strike rate of 147.54, and received a fair share of criticism.

Team India is looking at younger options for the next T20 cycle, and by the time the T20 World Cup 2028 arrives, SKY would be 37, and he won’t be getting any younger.

Players Suryakumar Yadav can replace in India's T20I team

Even at 35, the Mumbai Indians batter can be incorporated into the Indian T20I side, and there are several players he could replace. One big name is Sanju Samson, who has been out of touch since the start of the UK tour.

The Kerala batter was even dropped after three failures on the tour, and he certainly is not one of the untouchables in the squad.

Apart from Samson, Tilak Varma has also come under the BCCI scanner for his poor strike rate. The T20I vice-captain has not done much since his Asia Cup heroics, and a couple of more average series, and he could face the BCCI’s wrath.

There is also Shivam Dube in the list, who, too, is not getting younger, and his performances in recent matches for India have been unimpressive.
