The England Cricket Board has announced England's Playing XI for the 1st ODI vs India. After a fantastic T20I series, India and England will switch into ODI mode for the 50-over leg. The caravan has moved to Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham for the IND vs ENG 1st ODI on Tuesday (July 14).
The Harry Brook-led team were spellbinding in the recently concluded T20I series, winning it by 4-nil against the T20 World Champions.
The English captain led from the front, scoring a mammoth 229 runs in five matches, which enabled England to remain a mile ahead of India with the bat. Jofra Archer and Sam Curran compensated with the ball.
However, the IND vs ENG ODI series will see the return of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul to the fold, which will make things tougher for the hosts.
Let's look at the England Playing XI vs India
England Playing XI vs India for 1st ODI announced:
Top Order: Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root
Ben Duckett was dropped from the T20I squad, but he will be a primary opener in the IND vs ENG ODIs. Although the left-hander has not scored a century in the format since the 2025 Champions Trophy, he blasted a remarkable ton in the final Test vs New Zealand.
The supremely talented Jacob Bethell is set to open with Duckett. Even though he did well in the middle order in the Sri Lanka ODIs, Bethell’s promotion to the top will be seen as an aggressive move. Moreover, England also does not have space for the youngster in the middle order.

With two gung-ho left-handers at the top, England need a reliable batter at number 3 in the ENG Playing XI vs IND 1st ODI, and there can’t be anyone better than Joe Root for the position. With 7577 runs in ODIs, the stylish Yorkshire man has to be one of their best batters in this format as well. Moreover, he enjoys playing against India, having racked up three ODI tons against them.
Middle Order & All-Rounders: Harry Brook, Jos Buttler, Will Jacks, Sam Curran
The way Harry Brook batted in the T20Is, there is no debate about his place or form. He ended the five-match T20I series vs India with 229 runs at a staggering rate, including a 95 not out in the final game. Moreover, he slammed a 66-ball 136 in his last ODI outing. Although the England captain hasn't had great success against the Men in Blue in ODIs, the IND vs ENG series can be a coming of the age for Brook.
Jos Buttler has also regained his form with a spectacular century in the last game, so he would start the India vs England 1st ODI on a high. Moreover, the wicketkeeper batter is one of the senior-most batters in the line-up, and he will be crucial for them as they shape up for the ODI World Cup 2027.
Will Jacks and Sam Curran will be two all-rounders present in the ENG Playing XI vs IND 1st ODI. The two have proved their mettle time and again. With their prowess, they would bring a lot of balance to the England team sheet.
Bowlers: Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Adil Rashid
The fast bowling pair of Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue was breathing fire in the IND vs ENG T20Is. The two quicks were lethal as well as nearly impossible to negate, as they virtually knocked out the berserk Indian batting with their pace.
There is no argument about their place in the IND vs ENG 1st ODI, but the return of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul may make their lives a little tough. Liam Dawson takes up the spin bowling all rounder spot alongside Will Jacks.
Adil Rashid, as usual, will be used as a middle-over enforcer by England. The veteran leggie has exceptional numbers against India’s big boys, but both Rohit and Virat will throw a whole new challenge to him this time around. He is nearing the 250-wicket mark in ODIs, which he may achieve in the IND vs ENG ODIs.
